MAS DE MANCUSO
CARIÑENA, SPAIN
If you don't know Mas de Mancuso, folks, now's the time.
This small, in-the-know producer from Spain is putting out some terrific, limited-production reds of late, and we're here to tell you: you’d have to go to Spain to find this combination of history, tradition, terroir, and old-vine magic for just $32 a bottle.
So buy now, and lay in for a case, at least.
What do we love about them?
Where do we even start?
We could begin with the fact that these wines are not just terroir-focused but speak powerfully of place, and display wonderful balance, energy, drive, and expressive character.
They prioritize single-vineyards, some with plots nearly half a century old, favor indigenous yeast fermentations, and keep yields to a minimum — the better to craft the wines they envision.
We're by no means alone in our enthusiasm for them.
The Wine Advocate weighed in on both of these wines, describing the Familia Navascués Mas de Mancuso Cariñena Single Vineyard 2020, in a 94+ rave, as “something between a powerful Garnacha and a light Graciano, with structure, body and acidity but not necessarily excessive concentration.” The wine, it went on, combines “elegance with rusticity, [the] floral and [the] earthy,” and has “fine-grained tannins.”
The fruit was sourced from a small, 45-year-old plot of rocky soils in Almonacid de la Sierra, in the Cariñena region — a pretty ideal combination of age and geography, if the goal is to produce world-class grapes. In the cellar, the team at Familia Navascués, which has been producing wine in the region for three generations, employed indigenous yeasts to bring forth the natural, varietal character of the wine.
Only 1,200 bottles were produced.
The Mas de Mancuso Garnacha Single Vineyard 2021 underwent a similar fermentation, using 100% full clusters to capture the range and vitality of the fruit that vintage. And it shows, indisputably, in the glass.
“Amazing freshness and acidity,” The Wine Advocate wrote, calling it, in a 94-point paean, a "balanced, sapid and elegant" wine, “floral and perfumed,” with “notes of nutmeg and black pepper, and a touch of earth.”
The Garnacha, in particular, wowed us in our tasting with its aromatics, which are so carefully and thoughtfully developed, and the way the wine shows not just its varietal but also its terroir character, giving you an experience that, especially in an age of generic, internationalized wines, anchors you to a place and a time.
We can't wait for you to see what has us so pumped about this producer on the rise.
And we're sure that after a few pours of these Mas de Mancuso wines, you'll be saying:
Mas, mas.
(Sorry; couldn't resist).
As always, we only buy and source directly from the producer to ensure that your bottles and cases arrive as they should and as you deserve: with pristine provenance guaranteed.
