MARQUES DE RISCAL

RIOJA, SPAIN

Any 99-point wine is going to command our attention, but folks, this one’s extra special:

Marqués de Riscal's Gran Reserva 150th Aniversario 2016. It’s more than a serious wine it's a statement wine: a declaration of a legendary winery's soul.

Released in celebration of the sesquicentennial of one of Spain's great cultural treasures, this old-vine Rioja (as in, 80+ years old) was aged to absolute perfection and ready to wow you and your friends. Wine Enthusiast loved it just as much as we did, ascending to their highest lyrical register: "Dark-garnet to the eye, this wine has a bouquet of black currant, bittersweet chocolate, and almond blossom. Alights on the palate with flavors of blackberry, cassis, chocolate-covered espresso bean, violet, and citrus zest. Energetic tannins power their way into a cherry-pie finish."

We are so fortunate to have obtained a limited allocation of it, as well as two others from their stellar portfolio: their 95-point Reserva XR 2017, one of Decanter's Wines of the Year 2022, and their 94-point Vintage Selección Frank Gehry 2012.

To understand what makes these wines so good, vintage after vintage, you have to know that this is a house that is always, always pointing forward.

Yes, for sure, Marqués de Riscal has tradition on its side, with all the many benefits that come with it, but it has never rested on its vast reputation. In fact, it has long been an innovator, and many in Spain today view it as part of the so-called third-wave movement that has brought Rioja onto the world stage, thanks to a greater reliance on terroir and vineyard management and a drift away from heavy oaking.

We see exactly that nimbleness of philosophy in the other two wines we bring you today, the easy mix of old-school character and new-school clarity and definition.

Decanter declared the Reserva XR 2017 a "textbook" Tempranillo, calling it "balanced and complex," a wine of "ripeness and integrated oak, plus notes of nutmeg, walnut, cedar and crushed almond."

As for the homage to Gehry, who designed a hotel for the winery, this is pure Tempranillo, and only 3,400 bottles were produced. James Suckling hailed its "rich core of blackberry, kirsch, espresso and tar," its "well-integrated" tannins, and "concentrated yet balanced" profile.

If you love Rioja as much as we do, these are wines you don't want to miss out on – wines that will reward you now, and, also, down the road.

Our quantities are limited, however, so act now to add these three powerhouses to your collection today!
