MARCHESI ANTINORI TIGNANELLO

TUSCANY, ITALY

WHY BUY: Tignanello is always an event, and we're proud to be able to bring you early access to their dynamic, beautifully finessed, 96-point 2022 vintage to you in three different formats, and at some of the best prices in the marketplace. Six hundred years of heritage + ceaseless innovation + world-class winemaking = a luxurious must-have for the collection, and an investment that continues to pay dividends over time.

THE CONTEXT: Crafted by the 26th generation of this winemaking dynasty, it's the 51st edition, and proof that, even after half a century, the energy at this legend of an estate has never once flagged. The Wine Advocate once declared that "Tignanello ushered Italy into the world of modern winemaking," and while it might no longer feel as revolutionary to us today, it remains just as relevant as ever ... and just as rewarding.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING: "There’s extraordinary energy in this wine," James Suckling wrote, in a great gush of a review. "It displays a dark nose of black cherries, bramble fruit, violets, forest, licorice, bark, carob and leather. Density and tension dominate the full-bodied palate … with … velvety tannins.”

OUR TASTING NOTES: The composure here is remarkable, and almost, dare we say it, aristocratic. The aromatics are well-developed and evocative:  crushed red berries and dried flowers, followed by whispers of mint and warm spice that attest to its Tuscan origins and judicious handling of oak. The Sangiovese drives the core, with bright, focused red fruit, while those Cabernet components weave in and out like silk threads, adding just enough structure without detracting from the Italian character of the wine. The acidity cuts clean and true, making for a nice push-pull with the substantial tannins, and we love the lingering note of minerality, which all great Tuscan wines possess, and which carries you to and through the fine finish. Gorgeous, and it's only going to get better and better.

SPECS: The 2022 Tignanello is a blend, primarily, of Sangiovese, with smaller proportions of Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc for rounding and dimensionality. The wine undergoes a meticulous aging process, spending 17 months in wood. This includes three months in neutral oak during malolactic fermentation, followed by 14 months in barrels.

THE STORY: To taste Antinori's Super Tuscans is to savor more than 600 years of history, the character and terroir of land that has stood the test of time … and then some. The Antinori family, now in its 26th generation of winemaking, is the 10th oldest family-owned company in the world. Their winemaking legacy at the estate in southwest Florence dates back to 1385, long before Bolgheri became synonymous with fine Italian wine. Tignanello's story, however, begins in 1971 when a 28-year-old Piero Antinori took the helm of the family business. His vision to "rewrite all the rules for vino Italiano" culminated in the creation of Tignanello, a wine that did nothing less than to pull Italy into a new era of winemaking. The Tenuta Tignanello estate, nestled in the heart of Chianti Classico, spans 300 acres, including the prized hillside sites of Tignanello and Solaia. Tignanello broke new ground as the first Sangiovese aged in barrique and among the first to blend with non-indigenous varieties. This bold approach, declassifying wines and ignoring traditional norms, laid the foundation for the Super Tuscan movement. Today, under the stewardship of Piero's daughters, Antinori continues to balance respect for tradition with innovative winemaking. The 2021 Tignanello is a testament to this philosophy, showcasing the family's ability to craft wines that are both timeless and thoroughly modern.

FUN FACT: Antinori’s Solaia was the first Italian wine to be named the No. 1 Wine in the World by Wine Spectator, and Piero Antinori was the first Italian to be selected Decanter’s "Man of the Year."
