Specs: This is a blend of two barrels, one a ryed bourbon, the other, a wheated bourbon. The mashbill for barrel no. 1 was: 68% corn, 20% wheat, 12% malt; for barrel no. 2, 78% corn, 10% rye, and 12% malt. After blending, the resultant bourbon aged for 4 years.
The Story: Lux Row Distillers has had a remarkable run of it since its debut, in 2018, in charming Bardstown, Kentucky. And what a splash of a debut that was. Take a look at Lux Row's eye-popping numbers at launch: 18,000 square feet of distillery space, 10 barrel warehouses, and a 43-foot custom copper still. If you've ever had the privilege of enjoying a bottle of Rebel Bourbon, or Ezra Brooks, or David Nicholson Reserve – well, they all came from this state-of-the-art facility. The presiding guru is John Rempe, a certified food scientist with more than two decades of experience in distilling and spirits. Rempe created the David Nicholson Reserve brand, and oversees Luxco's stellar portfolio, which includes the aforementioned labels. His passion and his eye for detail are second to none, and, in just 6 years, Lux Row has already established itself as one of the most serious names in the industry, a distiller that has not shrunk from innovation and technology, but that has put new developments in the service of an old idea. The Bottling: This double single-barrel was inspired by Lux Row's own, hugely popular 12 Year Double-Barrel.
Our Tasting Notes: The expert handling of the blending of the ryed bourbon with the wheated bourbon has resulted in a gorgeous synthesis, with each spirit not just complementing the other, but also enhancing it, bringing out its best and fullest character. What the marriage also brings is a marvelous richness. For such a strong, high-proof bourbon, it's frankly astonishing that it's so easy-drinking. There's ample reason to play the guessing game here, trying to identify all the various notes of this or that, but the knit is so effortless that you might just forget.
