LUCIEN ET ANDRE BRUNEL, 'LES CAILLOUX' CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPE ROUGE
RHONE VALLEY, FRANCE 2016
By now, it’s no secret that 2016 was a spectacular vintage in the Rhône Valley—definitely one for the books. With a history spanning back to the 17th century, the Brunel family crafted a truly extraordinary lineup of wines in 2016. Wine Advocate reports of their 2016 ‘Les Cailloux’ label: “I've tasted many vintages of the Brunels' wines, and 2016 looks as if it will be their best ever.” A classic blend of 70% Grenache, 15% Mourvèdre, 10% Syrah and 5% Cinsault, the wine aged 18 months prior to bottling, and is full-bodied and luscious while maintaining its elegance. ‘Les Cailloux’ presents gorgeous layers of complexity, and with Concierge pricing sub-$50, it’s a value that can’t be missed.
The Brunel family’s winemaking history began in the 17th century with the purchase of a vineyard plot to the north of the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation from the Bishop of Avignon. Numerous generations followed, all of whom worked in the vineyards, but it was in 1954 that Lucien Brunel created the name ‘Les Cailloux’ ("the pebbles") to promote the estate’s unique terroir of large stones covering his vineyards, a feature that has now come to define top vineyards within the appellation. In 1971, Lucien’s son André Brunel took the reins from his father. His drive and commitment to quality resulted in a steady expansion of the family’s vineyards and the introduction of new labels to the portfolio. André was one of the first in Châteauneuf-du-Pape to use tailored ground cover methods and to practice a non-chemical approach to farming his vineyards. In 2012, André’s son Fabrice joined the team to ensure the family’s history and passion would continue; today, the Brunel family remains meticulous in the vineyards and winery, and the vintages being released showcase the estate’s bright future.
The vineyard for ‘Les Cailloux’ is composed of multiple plots, each with their own distinct characteristics. Bois de la Ville and Les Serres are noted for producing grapes of great concentration; Farguerol and Cansaud lend to the extremely rich aromatics of the wine; and finally, Cabrières and Revès, with chalky, limestone soils bring the overall structure and long finish to the blend.
