LOUIS JADOT
BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2020
Why Buy: The 2020 vintage in Beaune was one of the best in the past 30 years, with exceptional concentration and vibrant freshness almost across the board — and one of the best-sellers, too, so much so that most 2020s in the marketplace have already been snapped up. So we're thrilled to bring you these two beauts from 2020 from the House of Jadot at a phenomenal 29-30% off — that’s 1er Cru Burgundy for under $60 a bottle! Jadot, as you know, is as sure a thing as there is in the wine world, and its terroir mastery shines through in both bottles — one red, one white, each expressing not just the distinctive personality of its stony, chalky Beaune soils, but also the sensitive eye and hand of winemaker Frédéric Barnier and his team. At these prices, and with this pedigree, I’d be thinking case, or cases, so that whatever the occasion, you’ll have ample quantities of a crowd-pleasing white and an exciting and versatile red on hand to meet the demand.
What They're Saying:
- James Suckling called the 1er Cru Savigny-lès-Beaune Clos des Guettes (Domaine Gagey) Red 2020 a "very expressive" wine, full of "wonderful red-cherry fruit with hints of redcurrant and blackcurrant [that] pulls you into," he wrote, in his gushing, 94-point review. "For all the ripeness, the really striking thing about this is the great vitality, the way it leaps and bounds over your palate. The best kind of crispness at the long, clean finish.”
- Sourced "from a parcel at the top of the slope just below” Clos de l'Écu, the Beaune 1er Cru Bressandes Blanc (Domaine Gagey) 2020 is "another notable success" for 2020, The Wine Advocate wrote, in its 93-point review. "Mingling aromas of citrus zest and clear honey with hints of hazelnuts and fresh pastry, it's medium to full-bodied, satiny and seamless, with a chiseled profile and a long, mineral finish.”
The Terroir: Domaine Gagey, in Beaune, sits on a special parcel of land — land that only Jadot oversees — and is known for being of consistently superior quality.
Our Tasting Notes: One of the hallmarks of Jadot over the years is the beguiling push-pull you encounter in the glass, and the wines of 2020 are showing a dazzling duality — exciting but elegant; complex but charming; soulfully deep and, even, at times, intense, but with a delicacy that adds to their mystery and keeps you coming back for another sip, another bottle. The 1er Cru Savigny-lès-Beaune is striking in its energy, aliveness, and purity, and you’ll love the interplay of red fruits and earthy undertones that typify this special plot. The Bressandes Blanc also speaks clearly of its elevated source, with alluring, honeyed aromatics, layers of citrus brightness, superb integration, and a pronounced, and gorgeous, minerality.
The Story: Few names in the wine world carry the gravitas — or the excitement — of Louis Jadot. The House of Jadot has become synonymous with exceptional Burgundy since its founding, in 1859, by Henry Denis Jadot. Today, it is not just a grower and producer, but also a negociant, with an empire as vast as it is decorated, numbering 140 acres across 24 different vineyard sites. As Wine Anorak has written, "Among the leading negociant firms in Burgundy, Jadot currently occupies pole position." Today the winemaking is directed by Lardière's protege, Frédéric Barnier, but little has changed, materially. These remain, as Robert Parker once wrote, "rich, well-delineated, structured wines that stand the test of time.”
The Specs: The Savigny-lès-Beaune is 100% Pinot Noir from the Les Guettes vineyard, renowned for its gravelly, stony, chalk soil; the grapes were fermented in vats for up to a month, and then the wine was matured in oak barrels for 12 to 15 months before bottling. The Bressandes Blanc is 100% Chardonnay from a sloped, premier cru vineyard; it was matured in oak barrels for about 18 months before bottling.
What to Pair Them With: The Savigny-lès-Beaune all but demands to be partnered with old-school French classics — a rich preparation of duck confit or coq au vin, or a hearty cassoulet. For the Bressandes Blanc, think roasted oysters, gambas al ajillo, or a mushroom or truffle risotto.
Fun Fact: You might say that Beaune is the very DNA of Jadot — the family arrived there in 1794, and purchased its first vineyard there a generation later, in 1826.
