LOUIS JADOT

BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2021

Why Buy: The 2021 vintage proved challenging for much of Burgundy, but not so for the great House of Jadot. which managed not only to overcome the poor weather conditions, but to deliver a triumphant vintage. For that, we must give credit where credit is due: the size of its operations, a detriment to some observers, but here a decided boon, as the winemaking crew showed the advantage of operating at volume. Leaning on its expertise in sorting, selection, and micro-fermentation, it has delivered a roster of customarily excellent Burgundies, full of all the refinement and finesse that has won this enduring icon the adoration and devotion of fans across the world.

What They're Saying: Vinous, in a potential 97-point review, called the 2021 Chevalier-Montrachet Demoiselles Grand Cru a wine of "real pedigree," reveling in its aromatics of "yellow plum and pressed flower," its "crisp line of acidity," and its "detailed, lightly spiced finish." Of the 2021 Corton-Pougets Grand Cru (Domaine des Héritiers), a potential 96-pointer, the publication proclaimed it "one of the stars in 2021," a "classy and seductive" wine that is "lithe and agile in the mouth, with a mineral undertow toward the finish." James Suckling weighed in on the 2021 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru Domaine Louis Jadot, awarding 95 points and singling out its "beautiful clarity" and "tight-grained tannins."

The Story: Few names in the wine world carry the gravitas — or the excitement — of Louis Jadot. The House of Jadot has become synonymous with exceptional Burgundy since its founding, in 1859, by Henry Denis Jadot. Today, it is not just a grower and producer, but also a negociant, with an empire as vast as it is decorated, numbering 140 acres across 24 different vineyard sites. As Wine Anorak has written, "Among the leading negociant firms in Burgundy, Jadot currently occupies pole position." Today the winemaking is directed by Lardière's protege, Frédéric Barnier, but little has changed, materially. These remain, as Robert Parker once wrote, "rich, well-delineated, structured wines that stand the test of time."

Our Tasting Notes: At the same time these wines speak to the highest ideals of Burgundy, they also manage to reach so many of us on a deeper, more primal level. In our recent tasting, we were dazzled, time and again, by the duality on display in these wines — excitement but elegance, too; complexity but also charm; a soulful depth (and even, with certain bottles, a lingering intensity) but with a delicacy that adds to their mystery and keeps you coming back for another sip, another bottle, another vintage.

Fun Fact: Jadot is one of the most beloved and enduring wine producers in America, with A.C. Nielsen having previously recognized it as the “No. 1 French Brand in America” as well as the “No. 1 Premium French Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the U.S.A.”
