LOUIS JADOT
BURGUNDY, FRANCE 2023

WHY BUY:
Not only are many of these wines rare and almost never to be found in the marketplace, but they also were made in ultra-small runs, with, in some cases (Bonne-Mares is one), only a handful of barrels produced. On top of all that, they also represent the best values in their respective vineyards, bar none (take their Corton Charlemagne, one of the best-priced Corton Charlemagnes out there). That’s why we were so grateful, and thrilled, when Jadot opened its portfolio to us. But the treasure trove we encountered in their 2023 vintage only ratched our excitement. Inside Burgundy’s Jasper Morris has written that 2023 contains a slew of "absolutely lovely” wines, with many being "absolutely charming in an agreeably juicy style — lovely to drink young, not very high acidity, refined tannins, and full of fruit.” That could be said of most of these superb wines, which won’t require decades for you to enjoy their charms. This is Burgundy you can love right now, terroir-specific and pure, and with the promise of evolving into something even more magnificent.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:
Among today’s wines are a potential 97-pointer, four potential 96-pointers, a 95 pointer and a potential 95-pointer. Vinous reviewed a great many of these, including the “gorgeous, vivacious, wonderfully balanced” Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru, the “superb … graceful” Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, and the “completely seductive” Bâtard-Montrachet. The Wine Advocate, meanwhile, numbered itself among the many fans of these bottlings, with the “satiny … layered … long” Corton Charlemagne (Heritiers Louis Jadot) highest among them.

OUR TASTING NOTES:
At the same time these wines speak to the highest ideals of Burgundy, they also manage to reach so many of us on a deeper, more primal level. In our recent tasting, we were dazzled, time and again, by the duality on display in these wines — excitement but elegance, too; complexity but also charm; a soulful depth (and even, with certain bottles, a lingering intensity) but with a delicacy that adds to their mystery and keeps you coming back for another sip, another bottle, another vintage. The 2023s showcase Jadot's mastery in a particularly warm vintage, delivering wines with surprising freshness and that characteristic juicy appeal Morris described. There's an immediacy to these wines that's captivating, but they also, and intriguingly, possess the underlying structure that promises years of evolution ahead.

THE STORY:
Few names in the wine world carry the gravitas (or the excitement) of Louis Jadot. The House of Jadot has become synonymous with exceptional Burgundy since its founding, in 1859, by Henry Denis Jadot. Today, it is not just a grower and producer, but also a negociant, with an empire as vast as it is decorated, numbering 140 acres across 24 different vineyard sites. As Wine Anorak has written, "Among the leading negociant firms in Burgundy, Jadot currently occupies pole position." Today the winemaking is directed by Lardière's protege, Frédéric Barnier, but little has changed, materially. These remain, as Robert Parker once wrote, "rich, well-delineated, structured wines that stand the test of time."

FUN FACT:
Jadot is one of the most beloved and enduring wine producers in America, with A.C. Nielsen having previously recognized it as the "No. 1 French Brand in America" as well as the "No. 1 Premium French Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in the U.S.A."
