LOST PARCELS, CABERNET SAUVIGNON

NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA 2019

One of the biggest trends in Napa these days is the sourcing of high-elevation mountain fruit to produce premium Cabernet Sauvignon, and folks, we are so here for it.

That’s what initially drew us to Lost Parcels, a passion project built to showcase the character and complexity of high-altitude vineyards on "lost" terrains — i.e., overlooked plots on the slopes of the volcanic massifs that run east-west along Napa Valley.

What kept us coming back to Lost Parcels, though, was the consistent excellence of its wines.

And with their 95-point 2019 vintage, winemaker Matthieu Grassin and team appear to have found a new level.

Paul Hobbs declared that "in time, 2019 will prove to be one of the standout vintages of the decade" for Cabernet Sauvignon, and this standout Cabernet is already making good on the promise of elegant “classicism” that Hobbs alluded to. Decanter called it a "tremendous" wine, "full-bodied with exceptional freshness," and "layered with tart black fruit, blueberry skin, and firm, grippy tannins that resolve nicely into a finish of bright baking spices and crushed stones."

Grassin made it with high-elevation grapes from, primarily, Howell Mountain, Mount Veeder, and Spring Mountain -- and as we all know, the higher the elevation, the greater stress on the vines. Why are stressed vines desirable? Because the grapes tend to have better color and concentration of flavor, and are also more likely to create structured wines of elegance and finesse.

At our tasting, that mountain fruit shone through clearly, and we were struck, as well, by its already soft textures, which suggest to us that it will age well and gracefully.

Adding to its allure is the fact that only 500 cases were produced.

We hope you love it as much as we do, and that you're drawn to support the ongoing work of this terrific project — a kind of parallel to the hunt for forgotten casks that drives the independent bottlers in the realm of rum, Cognac, sherry, and other spirits.

We unfortunately have only a limited number of bottles, however, so hurry to secure this exceptional Cabernet today!
