Why It's Special: A limited-release, ultra-premium Añejo from one of the fastest-rising stars in the tequila world: Lobos 1707, which took home the coveted Best Reposado Tequila Award at the 2022 San Francisco World Spirits Competition. Aged 12-18 months in American white oak barrels and finished for six months in Pedro Ximenez sherry barrels, this highly-anticipated bottling completes the coveted Lobos pack: a suite of top-shelf tequilas that a slew of celebrities, including Lebron James (a lead investor), Arnold Schwarzenegger, Drake, DJ Khaled, and Paris Hilton have thrown their weight behind.
The Story: We won't speculate as to the reasons Lebron, in 2020, crossed (ha) into the tequila space, though it might have had a liiiiittle something to do with the fact that Michael Jordan became a partner, in 2019, in the launch of Cincoro Tequila. (Of course, celebrities have been making tequila their plaything for a while now, with George Clooney, Justin Timberlake, Adam Levine, Kendall Jenner, and The Rock all getting into the game.) Regardless, the 4x NBA champion has always been a keen evaluator of talent, and Diego Osorio, Dia Simms, and the rest of the team at Lobos 1707 have undeniably crafted something special – a brand that celebrates timeless old-school values (never stinting on craft, pursuing excellence at every step of a slow, laborious process) while looking to broaden the demographic reach of one of the world's great distillations.
The Specs: Begin with the agave, which was grown in the clay soils of Jalisco and given a minimum of six years to reach peak ripeness before harvesting. After distillation, the spirit aged for 12-18 months in American white oak barrels, then was extracted and finished in the manner of the great sherries of Spain – which are treated to the slow drip method known as the solera method, a famed practice that literally imparts the character of many fine casks to the final product.
Our Tasting Notes: On the nose, a decidedly herby, woody profile, with undertones of walnut, vanilla, coffee, and subtle smoke. Those notes of walnut and vanilla carry through to the palate, along with caramel, pear, and apple. Similar to the soft, sturdy tannins in a great Bordeaux, the presence of ginger and wood act as guard rails, giving the tequila its structure and definition.
Fun Fact: After Lebron broke Kareem Abdul-Jabbar's NBA record for most career points, he and his closest friends, according to Rolling Stone, toasted his achievement with Lobos 1707 tequila at a private dinner.
What to Pair It With: This is a remarkably versatile tequila that plays just as well with pork or chorizo tacos as it does with finer fare, like pan-roasted salmon. It works with fish and seafood as well as it does with meats, like grilled steak or braised lamb. And if you've got a chocolate cake or salted caramel ice cream, it makes for a fantastic companion ... or just alone, neat or on the rocks, as a post-prandial kick-back.
