Château Cheval Blanc, which translates to ‘white horse,’ has a long, illustrious history in Saint Emilion that is traced back to 1832. When the classification of St. Emilion was initially created in 1955, only two Châteaux earned the coveted Premier Grand Cru Classe A status, Château Cheval Blanc and Château Ausone. Châteaux with Premier Grand Cru Classe A status have long been considered in the same league as the iconic First Growths in the Medoc, who were classified in 1855. Château Cheval Blanc was purchased in 1998 by LVMH, and legendary Bordeaux winemaker Pierre Lurton was hired to manage the property for them as well as their most famous and revered White Bordeaux estate, Château d’Yquem.
