LAURENT-PERRIER GRAND SIÈCLE no.27

CHAMPAGNE, FRANCE

WHY BUY: This 99-point Grand Siècle Grande Cuvée N.27 NV from the great Laurent-Perrier is as good as Champagne gets, folks. Crystalline and creamy, with fine and tiny bubbles, it's a testament to this house’s proudly patient methods: privileging Chardonnay over Pinot Noir in the final mix, giving the wines extended time to age on the lees in their ancient chalk cellars (a full 9 years in this case), and, above all, blending with a sensitivity and grace that is second to no one. We're also proud to be able to bring you their Héritage Brut, the so-called "little sister" to the Grand Siècle, which would be the flagship at most other houses. This is a fantastic opportunity to stock your cellar with a pair of wines that will instantly turn any day into an event.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: James Suckling was dazzled by the Grand Siècle N.27, awarding 99 points and marveling at a Champagne that is "full-bodied but not at all heavy, turning almost weightless" and whose “fascinating … evolving” finish "goes on for minutes.”

OUR TASTING NOTES: The N. 27: Nine years on the lees has resulted in a marvelously aromatic and alluring nose, one that opens with honeysuckle, lavender, and apple, and then modulates into something cooler and more geological: graphite, stone, chalk. This is an achievement all its own, in our book; very few Champagnes ask this much of you on the nose. On the palate, it delivers what that nose promises and then some — a deep, well-tended creaminess, with bubbles so fine and light that you’re carried, and effortlessly, to and through the finish, which lingers like a wonderful memory.

The Héritage Brut spent five years on the lees, and we loved the way it shows its pedigree and patience. Crushed seashells are prominent on the nose, while the palate brings a taste of crème brûlée with the faintest saline edge. And, through it all, that signature Laurent-Perrier precision that cuts through the richness like a sharp serrated knife.

THE STORY: The transformation of this estate (and hence, the modern era) began just after World War II, when Bernard de Nonancourt arrived at this early 1800s-founded house in 1948 and essentially reinvented what Laurent-Perrier could be. In a region obsessed with Pinot Noir, he doubled down on Chardonnay, creating a house style that was simultaneously richer and more precise than anyone at the time thought possible. But he was also a traditionalist, and leaned hard on methods that had been around for decades: extended lees contact to build complexity without weight; blending protocols that treat each cuvée as a symphony rather than a simple mix; and unhurried time spent in the ancient chalk cellars beneath the estate to bring the wines to age with grace. Today, under the leadership of his daughters Alexandra and Stéphanie, Laurent-Perrier continues this tradition of — let's call it informed rebellion.

FUN FACT: Before he took over the estate, de Nonancourt was a tank commander for the French Army, and took part in the raid and capture of Eagle's Nest, in Berchtesgaden, where, among other things, he and his men unearthed a stash of some 500,000 bottles of Bordeaux and Burgundy.

OUR GUARANTEE: As always, we only source directly from the estate to ensure that your wines arrive as they should, and as you deserve: with pristine provenance. Secure your bottles and cases today!
