When we brought you word of Laphroaig’s Strong Characters Chapter 1 a couple of months ago, we promised Chapter 2 was on its way — and now, it’s finally here. For anyone who missed out the first time around, this is your moment to step back into one of the most compelling limited series in Scotch today.
And as a welcome addition, we’re also featuring the return of Laphroaig’s 15 Year — their first 15-year age statement release in over a decade, and a beautifully balanced introduction to the distillery’s unmistakable style.
But first — Chapter 2.
The next release in Laphroaig’s Strong Characters series is a 35 Year Old Scotch that pays tribute to Dugald Johnston, the young heir who took on the distillery in 1847 and helped shape its enduring legacy. Matured for three and a half decades in American oak barrels and hogsheads, it stands as both a collector’s piece and a profound expression of Laphroaig’s uncompromising identity.
The peat is unmistakably there — it wouldn’t be Laphroaig without it — but here, it’s woven into something far more intricate and refined. The nose opens with an enticing sweetness, layered with freshly baked pastry and orchard fruit — apple and cherry reminiscent of a warm crumble. On the palate, a gentle smokiness gives way to spice and a creamy texture, unfolding into soft raisin notes and a lingering warmth. The finish carries delicate anise, a subtle peppery tingle, and a slow return to elegant peat smoke.
It’s this interplay — between smoke, sweetness, and time — that makes Chapter 2 such a compelling dram. Deeply layered, constantly evolving, and unmistakably Islay, it’s a whisky that rewards patience and attention with every sip.
