NOBLE CHAMPAGNE

CHAMPAGNE, FRANCE 2005

Why Buy: Noble Cuvée represents Lanson's pinnacle, produced only in the most exceptional years. These cellar-aged, ready-to-drink gems, 95- and 94-points, respectively, are among the most varietally true expressions of Champagne's chalky terroirs we've tasted in recent memory. Not only because Lanson sources Grand Cru grapes (Chardonnay from Côte des Blancs and Pinot Noir from Montagne de Reims), but also because they are strict constitutionalists when it comes to abiding by the original method (no malolactic fermentation, here) for making Champagne. Essential (and absolutely delicious) additions for the serious collector.

What They're Saying: James Suckling lauded the 95-point Noble Cuvée Brut 2005 as “fragrant and generous... full of flavor, with caressing, soft bubbles.” He was enamored, too, of the Blanc de Blancs 2005, awarding it 94 points and singling out its “vibrant nose,” its "rich and generous” palate, and its "creamy and rounded layers."

Our Tasting Notes: The Noble Cuvée Brut 2005’s opening statement is captivating and evocative, tempting you with quince, spiced pears, and baked apples, all of these underscored by candied ginger and toasted almonds. Its palate is rich, edging toward sumptuous, yet for all that is focused and balance, with Lanson's signature freshness shining through. The Blanc de Blancs 2005 dazzles aromatically, with lemon verbena, chamomile, and poached pears, opening out on the palate into notes of cashews and marmalade on toast. Both cuvées epitomize Lanson's style: focused, fruity, and gloriously ready to drink.

The Specs: The Noble Cuvée Brut 2005 is 70% Grand Cru Chardonnay from Côte des Blancs, 30% Grand Cru Pinot Noir from Verzenay; the Noble Cuvée Blanc de Blancs 2005 is 100% Grand Cru Chardonnay

The Story: Founded in 1760, Lanson stands as one of Champagne's oldest houses, its legacy intertwined with the region's history. For over a century, Lanson's Cellar Masters have honed the art of cultivating great vintages, respecting both nature and tradition. The house's commitment to excellence is evident in its unique vinification process — adhering to the original Champagne method without malolactic fermentation, resulting in wines of remarkable purity and longevity. Lanson's prestige extends beyond the bottle. As the Champagne of choice at Wimbledon for over 25 years and one of the oldest holders of the Royal Warrant, it has become synonymous with elegance and celebration at the highest levels of society. The Noble Cuvée line, introduced in 1979, represents the pinnacle of Lanson's craft, a liquid embodiment of Champagne's finest terroirs.

What to Pair Them With: The Brut 2005 shines alongside oysters or a delicate lobster or scallop risotto; the Blanc de Blancs 2005 is sublime with caviar or a wedge of rich, creamy Brie.

Fun Fact: When the Eiffel Tower debuted at L'Exposition Universelle de Paris in 1889, it was Lanson's 1883 vintage that toasted the occasion, cementing the house's place in French cultural history.
