LA SACRESTIA, BAROLO 'GABUTTI'
PIEDMONT, ITALY 2014
Home to the iconic wines of Gaja, Conterno, and Giacosa, Barolo is considered one of the most prestigious wine regions in the world. The noble grape Nebbiolo plays center stage here, offering a level of complexity and longevity that cannot be found anywhere else. The renowned single vineyards within the appellation further showcase the greatness of Barolo: these highly coveted crus produce unique, cellar-worthy (not to mention absolutely delicious) wines that are in a league of their own—exemplifying the very best of this world-famous region. To be sure, a cru can increase your Barolo bottle price (in many cases quite significantly), yet there remains excellent value to be had if you know where to look. Today’s offer of the 2014 La Sacrestia Barolo from the Gabutti cru represents one such extreme value: a beautiful single-vineyard expression for less than $35 a bottle!
Founded in the early 1900s, Giovanni Sordo is one of the largest vineyard landowners in Barolo, and currently has 53 hectares planted with vines. As the only existing winery that boasts eight different crus in its portfolio, Sordo’s single-cru wines showcase the distinctive qualities of Barolo—from the bold and powerful to the floral and elegant. Now managed by third generation owner Giorgio and daughter Paula, the Sordo estate includes modern facilities that allow the family to continue crafting terroir-focused wine, including their newest project, La Sacrestia. Their Gabutti cru, located in the prestigious municipality of Serralunga d’Alba, is top of the line. The grapes grown in this esteemed cru produce wines that are characteristically plush, full-bodied, and rich with bold fruit profiles that balance the supple tannins.
Located on the eastern side of the Gabutti cru where soils are composed of compacted calcareous clay marl, La Sacrestia wines tend to display a more finessed style. The Nebbiolo grapes receive maximum sun exposure while being protected from winds and many vines range from 35-50 years old. Aged for nearly two years in Slavonian oak barrels, the wine is balanced and incredibly well structured, unveiling succulent flavors of strawberries and glazed cherries. The 2014’s bright acidity makes it approachable now, but the vintage will certainly continue to evolve for another decade. Now is the perfect opportunity to grab a few cases of a Barolo cru at an amazing “non-cru” price (up to 30% off!).
