PAOLA SORDO, LA SACRESTIA, BAROLO
Gabutti, Perno, Ravera
PIEDMONT, ITALY 2013
Home to the legendary wines of Gaja, Conterno and Giacosa, the wines of Barolo are considered some of the greatest produced in the world. The noble Nebbiolo grape plays center stage offering a level of complexity and longevity that cannot be found anywhere else, further defining the wines of Barolo. Yet, depending on the particular terroir from which the grapes are sourced, the variety takes on a character that is entirely unique, a character completely their own - with sub-regions like Serralunga d’Alba, Monforte d’Alba, and Novello each offering their own distinct expression of this exceptional grape. Today it is the wines of these particular sub-regions that we’ve chosen to showcase, with three single-vineyard bottlings from the exceptional 2013 produced by Paola Sordo.
The Sordo estate lies in the beautiful Langhe region between the towns of Castiglione Falletto and Barolo and the family has been producing wine for four generations. Focusing on single vineyards, their crus Gabutti, Perno and Ravera are exceptionally unique and delicious yet exemplify the true character of Barolo. Gabutti is top of the line, and the boldest expression coming from the prestigious municipality of Serralunga d’Alba. Here on the eastern end of the Gabutti Cru, the wine showcases the flowing and floral side of Nebbiolo from Serralunga. The vineyard is formed from soils of compacted calcareous clay marl, with a southern facing slope offering maximum sun exposure, yet shielding the Nebbiolo grapes from the wind. With vines between 35-50 years old, the wine is aged for 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels and delivers incredible intensity and structure, with the longest aging potential of today’s wines. Perno comes from the municipality of Monforte d’Alba, with red soils composed of stones with clay and sand. Vines are 25-35 years old and the wine is aged for 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels. Remarkable aromatics complement the lively acidity, smooth tannins and seamless finish. Ravera, unlike the first two crus, is located south of the town of Barolo in the municipality of Novello. Ravera’s unique southwest facing slope gives it an advantage as it is able to further differentiate itself from the more traditional south facing slopes, offering the most beautiful, elegant bouquet of the three crus. The fruit destined for Ravera is sourced from 20 year old vines planted in loose, mineral-rich soils, intermixed with white and brownish-gray marl. Aged for 24 months in Slavonian oak barrels, the vibrancy and finesse along with its soft, round tannins make this wine the most approachable of the trio.
Having all received exceptional reviews and ratings, we wanted to offer these three single-vineyards together so you’ll be able to experience for yourself the beauty that Nebbiolo has to offer. Along with the long term aging potential for all three of these wines, they are an incredible deal for one of the great red wines of the world. For one week only, we are offering all three single-vineyards in 3 or 6 pack samplers for up to 25% off!
