Acclaimed winemaker Carpenter has developed a dedicated following largely for his extremely limited production California wines, including Lokoya, Cardinale, and La Jota—and one taste of today’s wine will demonstrate precisely why his following continues to grow. Synonymous with power, ageability and finesse, his Napa wines can often boast price tags in the triple digits, but surprising value does exist if you know where to look. Crafted with meticulous care from the higher-elevation volcanic plateau of Howell Mountain, the 2017 La Jota Merlot is lush and vivacious, offering up a profile of plums, blueberry compote, cloves, underbrush, and peppery spice. The wine is a majestic example of the greatness Merlot can achieve and you’ll certainly want to experience it yourself.

With a reputation and affinity for making wines from mountain terroir, the winemaking precision and dedication of Chris Carpenter is apparent across each of his winemaking projects. Howell Mountain itself is a weathered volcanic "knob" with two distinct soils: white decomposed volcanic ash and red, iron-rich soils of clay and volcanic rock. The vines struggle to survive, yielding tiny berries and clusters with intensely concentrated flavor. The La Jota estate vineyards are located in a windswept hollow high on Howell Mountain, and the Merlot, Cabernets Franc and Sauvignon grown here achieve impeccable balance between acidity and sugar content, ultimately producing complex, harmonious wines. Barrel-aged for 20 months in French oak and bottled unfined and unfiltered, the 2017 La Jota Merlot is rich and velvety without feeling heavy. The purity of the fruit and minerality shines through, while the oak influence softens the texture and adds soft hints of baking spice and vanilla. This is a flat-out delicious wine that is accessible now, but will continue to reward for the next 15+ years. Place your order today to secure Concierge-only pricing!
