Single malt collectors, this one's for you. The tiny island of Jura is located off the coast of Scotland, and though it is only 60 miles from the mainland, it feels a world away. The staggeringly beautiful and remote landscape is home to a single road, a single pub, and a single distillery: the Isle of Jura Distilling Co. In the words of the distillery, “it’s not an easy place to make whisky but we believe it’s the best.” And after a sip of today’s award-winning 21-year Jura single malt, we’re inclined to agree.
The whisky has been dubbed ‘Tide Time’ in honor of the sound of the tide crashing along Jura’s rocky shores, which is often the only sound that can be heard on this distant island. The whisky aged 21 years in ex-Bourbon barrels, and to further amplify the decadence, finished aging in virgin American white oak casks. A stunning honey gold with rich viscosity in the glass, the dram was bottled at 46.7% ABV and boasts a layered profile of lemon cake, almond, white chocolate, ginger, and coconut with a finish that goes on and on.
Though the distillery first began producing whisky in the 1800s, its history saw many periods of shutdowns, similar to many distilleries on Islay and the mainland regions. Though their flagship bottles have been introducing consumers and whisky enthusiasts to the tiny Jura isle for several years now, the limited editions and impressive age statement bottles really show the potential of the region and distillery among Scotland’s elite.
In 2020, ‘Tide Time’ was awarded 94 points in the Ultimate Spirits Challenge as well as a remarkable 95 points from the International Wine & Spirits Competition, one of the most influential and respected spirits competitions in the world. The distillery releases a new batch of ‘Tide Time’ annually in limited quantities; each sandblasted bottle (a style to mimic the effect that the sea has on glass) displays its year of bottling and is encased in a striking display box.
