JORDAN VINEYARD & WINERY
SONOMA, CALIFORNIA 2009-2017

WHY BUY: We almost never see back vintages of Jordan Vineyard & Winery, and let me tell you, folks: all those years of maturation (we've secured 7 vintages, going all the way back to the first decade of this century), have worked an extra kind of magic on these wines, taking Jordan's signature smoothness and suppleness and amplifying it. Each of these Cabernets is a blend of different vineyards and Bordeaux varieties, aged in a mix of French oak barrels to achieve the signature elegance, silkiness, and balance for which Jordan has become known, and given between 8 and 16 years to mature further in bottle. And each tells its own story, providing the collector with a different window into the library of this proudly independent, family-operated producer. Not least, each bottle comes direct from the winery's own temperature-controlled cellars, stored exactly as winemaker Rob Davis intended until this release. These wines have already evolved into something silky, layered, and harmonious. When they arrive, you’ll have wines that are right in the middle of their drinking windows, and that deliver the kind of maturity and complexity that, in today’s escalating market, typically commands a much prettier penny.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: Critics have hailed Jordan across multiple vintages in this vertical. Decanter called the 2017 a "masterful balancing act," with "impressively fresh" character and "unctuous layers of blue and black fruits,” and was nearly as enamored of the 2009, calling it "a sheer joy to drink," with "dusty cherry, redcurrant, dried lilac and rose aromas." James Suckling praised the 2015, extolling its "secondary characteristics of blackcurrants, tea leaves, cured meat and leather” and singling out its "fine tannins and fresh acidity."

OUR TASTING NOTES: Our recent tasting amounted to a grand tour of Jordan’s portfolio across the past two decades, and confirmed what we have long known: Rob Davis was a master, and Jordan is among the inarguable greats of our time. These are consistently elegant wines that marry Old World finesse with California purity and energy. The older vintages reveal gorgeous secondary development (leather, tobacco, and dried florals weaving in and around the beautiful core fruit flavors), while the younger bottles show how Jordan's judicious and smart approach to winemaking creates wines built for the long haul. What strikes you across all these vintages is the balance: alcohol and acidity calibrated so precisely that these wines complement rather than overpower food, whether you're serving a rich and juicy ribeye or an herb-roasted chicken.

THE STORY: Every bottle in this vertical represents the artistry of legendary winemaker Rob Davis, who learned at the hands of the great André Tchelistcheff and crafted these wines during his distinguished, five-decade stint at Jordan from 1976 to 2019. Davis spent countless hours working with growers throughout Alexander Valley to perfect the art of blending. Jordan’s philosophy centers on the belief that "the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.” And these wines don’t just reflect that philosophy, they embody it, delivering  gorgeous integration and harmony. In this way John Jordan continues to choose to ratify his father Tom's vision, in producing supple, food-friendly wines that flourish in every setting.

THE VINTAGES: What we have here is a fascinating glimpse into Jordan's library. The 2009 shows gorgeous maturity with almost imperceptible tannins and earthy complexity, while the 2017 represents a masterpiece of balance with grippy yet fine-grained tannins supporting layers of dark fruit and graphite. The 2015 displays beautiful secondary evolution with tea leaf and cedar notes, but don't overlook the 2014, which bridges the gap between youthful fruit and mature development. The 2012 offers exceptional value in both standard bottles and large formats, while the 2010 represents perhaps the pinnacle of aging potential in this vertical. Across the board, these are wines that will continue evolving gracefully for years to come.

FUN FACT: John Jordan is what used to be called “a man of parts,” with the Robb Report noting that he has been "at various times a naval intelligence officer, an attorney, and a vintner."

OUR GUARANTEE: Pristine provenance is of the utmost importance to us. Rest assured that we work fanatically hard to ensure that your wines will arrive in your hands in optimal condition, exactly as Jordan intended them.
