JERMANN

FRIULI, ITALY 2022

Why Buy: This 96- and 94-pointer (superlative scores, by the way, for a wine press that tends to stint on the numbers when it comes to white wines) are as good as white wine gets, friends: estate-grown, single-vineyard, old-vine expressions that have been expertly aged for maximum richness, depth, and pleasure. A stirring reminder that the partnership between the great Silvio Jermann and the legendary Antinori family is, for all of us who love incredible wine, the gift that keeps on giving.

What They're Saying: James Suckling praised the Vintage Tunina, in awarding 96 points, as a "focused" white wine of "character," hailing its abundance of "tangy fruit with spicy lemon, lime, lemongrass and raw ginger," with just "a hint of waxy undertones." Falstaff, meanwhile, celebrated the Dreams, in its 94-point review, as a powerful and lithe expression of Chardonnay.

Our Tasting Notes:

* Vintage Tunina: A field blend of native and international varietals, this is an unfolding poem that delivers surprises with each delicious sip, as citrus gives way to spice and spice gives way to an unexpected creaminess. Its precision is what lingers, and beautifully captures the essence of Friuli's renowned "Ponca" soils.

* Dreams: Barrel-fermented and aged on the lees, this Chardonnay impresses with its balance of power and finesse. Its lush orchard fruit and toasted oak draw immediate attention, but what keeps us coming back to it is its vibrant acidity. A commanding wine that never forgets to be graceful.

The Specs: Both wines are crafted from estate-grown fruit, with the Vintage Tunina sourced from 30-year-old vines and the Dreams from 25-year-old vines. 25% of Vintage Tunina was aged in large oak cask for 11 months. Dreams is aged for 11 months in 20% new and 80% used French barrels.

The Story: The Jermann estate was founded in the Collio Goriziano region of Friuli in 1881, when Anton Jermann emigrated from Austria. For nearly a century, the family tended to both livestock and grapevines, selling their grapes in bulk. It wasn't until 1975, however, that the modern winery was launched, spearheaded by the visionary Silvio Jermann, the fifth generation in Friuli. Partnering with the renowned Antinori family — a canny stroke of genius — Silvio brought a new level of winemaking prowess and creativity to the estate, culminating in the release of the iconic Vintage Tunina. This wine, along with the groundbreaking Dreams, cemented Jermann's reputation as a trailblazer in Italian viticulture

What to Pair Them With: The vibrant acidity and layered flavors of these whites make them perfect mates for a wide range of dishes, from rich and creamy cacio e pepe to gambas al ajillo (shrimp in garlic sauce), and hard, aged cheeses.

Fun Fact: The Jermann estate's name and logo pay homage to the family's Austrian roots — the surname "Jermann” being a variant of the German name "Hermann."

Our Guarantee: As always, we only buy and source directly from the estate, to ensure that your bottles arrive with pristine provenance. Secure yours today!
