We were privileged to taste through his 2022 vintage – an across-the-board terrific expression of what Decanter has termed a "very good" vintage – and are proud to bring you these four beauties (including a Grand Cru and two premier Crus), which have all the classicism and purity we have come to expect of Boillot. They also possess what is perhaps the most Boillot quality of all: they are terroir wines that are also deeply, intensely personal.
The Story: After making wines for the venerable Olivier Leflaive for four stellar years, Boillot, the grandson of Burgundy icon Etienne Sauzet, split from the family domaine in 1985. He set out on his own, blazing an uncompromising path. His pursuit of perfection is by now the stuff of legend. For more than three decades he continued to push standards in the vineyards and in the cellar, with the goal of producing wines that spoke of time and place, and that conveyed ineffable character and soul, but that also expressed themselves with uncommon purity and definition. Boillot has since stepped back – his Pommard-based domaine is in the hands of his daughter, Lydie, and her husband, François, and he functions mostly as a kind of benevolent overseer – but nothing at all has changed with his departure from daily operations. Boillot was a rebel, who made exactly the wines he wanted, and we can tell you that that fierce spirit animates every aspect of this estate and operation.
Our Tasting Notes: These are wines, above all, of exceptional finesse and structure, as has always been true of the greatest white Burgundies. Morris perhaps summed it up best, writing that Boillot’s “white wines are characterized by their huge concentration, class and wonderful expression of their terroir.” Our recent tasting showcased an amplitude of fruit, a surprising depth and density, a marvelous and nervy tension, and, perhaps most winning of all, a laser-like focus that gives these wines tremendous lift and excitement.
Fun Fact: Boillot had no formal training when he set out to make his own wines, having picked up most of what he knew of the craft from working alongside his grandfather.
