The Story: The Jean Colin family has tended its patch of southeastern Sancerre for four generations. Here, a wine lover will find some of the most elegant and finely-etched Sauvignon Blancs in the world, thanks to the flint-based soils of Ménétréol sous Sancerre, Thauvenay, and Vinon. It just so happens that Jean Colin is planted in all three villages. This terroir is more than the backbone of these elegant, beautiful wines; it is the beating heart, the soul. And winemaker Eric Louis, who took over the winery in 1995, knows that his mission is to deliver a pure, terroir expression – a goal he pursues with steadfast rigor and devotion in every vintage, every bottle.

Purity of Method: The estate, certified organic in 2017, earned the certification "biodynamic" in 2022.

Our Tasting Notes: If you tend to think of Sancerre at its best as a wine of crispness and refreshment, you're certainly not going to be disappointed. But to linger on those qualities is to slight these remarkable wines, which deliver so much more. In all three we find well-developed aromatics, insinuating depth, a marvelous flinty minerality, and an elongation of line that takes you – thrillingly – all the way to the finish.
