The inspired collab of Jack Daniel’s and the McLaren Mastercard Formula 1 team has resulted in a new-to-the-world expression and a first-ever release in the great Jack line.
What excites us most about this new whiskey, though, is not its novelty but its quality.
Jack used whiskey stocks whose staves were aged 2-3 times longer than their standard barrels, in order to soften the tannins in the wood. The benefits are obvious, and enormous: a smoother, gentler palate, along with a depth of aroma and flavor from the long-aged staves.
At 58.7% ABV (117.4 proof), it’s as high-octane as you might hope for, given the vroom-vroom of the McLaren connection, but it goes down without any scorch.
The result is robust and expansive, with, as the folks at McLaren might say, impressive handling and control. It opens with a burst of sweet maple and toasted oak before shifting gears into the palate, which begins with a wave of caramel, chocolate, and charred oak, then rounds the corner into bananas, nuts, and baking spices. The finish is a ride all its own, rich and almost creamy, and so smooth that we were immediately primed for another sip.
In Jack, you've got a 160-year-old institution that is the first registered distillery in the United States, and ( believe it or not) is included on the National Register of Historic Places.
In McLaren, we're talking about a renowned race team that's approaching its 1000th Grand Prix.
