Note of Distinction: Unlike single malts, which are made in pot stills, single grain scotch whiskies are distilled in column stills, a production method not unlike that of American bourbon. The result is whiskies that are smoother and mellower than single malts, and that tend to absorb more of the influence from their casks, as this one absolutely does.
The Story: Located in the Scottish Highlands, on the ruggedly picturesque shores of Cromarty Firth, the Invergordon Grain Distillery is, today, one of only six dedicated grain distilleries in Scotland – and the only one in the Highlands. Its Coffey stills are renowned for producing some of the finest single grain Scotch whisky in the world. Vital to the character of these whiskies is the quality of the water and grain of the local terroir. Invergordon sources its water from Loch Glass, an ancient freshwater reservoir that produces pure, granite-filtered water, and its mashbill is made up of maize, malted and un-malted barley, and locally-sourced Scottish wheat.
Specs: The whisky was distilled in May, 1993, aged in ex-bourbon barrels, and bottled in May, 2023.
Our Tasting Notes: Smoothness, gentleness, and balance are the watchwords for this wonderful slow sipper. A bright sweetness asserts itself from the get-go, in appealing notes of lemon meringue pie and vanilla cream, with trailing hints of toasted hazelnuts and lime zest. On the palate, lemon morphs into peach and nectarine, and the vanilla cream shades into tones of almond, with, along the edges, a whisper of black pepper and orange essence. That hit of black pepper carries through to the finish, along with a gentle wave of warming spice and rich, toasty walnut.
ABV: 50.3% (100.6 proof).
Fun Fact: The town of Invergordon was once a major base for the home fleet of the Royal Navy.
