Located in Sant’Angelo in Colle, Il Poggione is one of Montalcino’s most historic wineries. The winery’s history extends back at least 100 years and it has become one of the region’s most expansive estates; Vinous Media notes “I’m not sure how Il Poggione manages to remain one of the largest producers of Brunello, maintaining such a high level of quality and turning out some of the best wines of the vintage year after year—but they do. The 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is yet another stunning example.” Today we are proud to present a lineup of high-scoring Il Poggione releases, including the 97-point 2016 Brunello di Montalcino and 97-point 2015 Riserva Vigna Paganelli, along with two 2018 Rossos (Rosso Toscana and Rosso di Montalcino) that offer up unbeatable value and immediate enjoyment while the Brunellos continue their long evolution. Calling all fans of bold, complex reds! Today’s offer calls for stocking up.

Il Poggione has become one of today’s top Tuscan producers, and for good reason. As a founding family of the Brunello Consortium, the Franceschi family has helped develop the high standards for the prestigious Brunello di Montalcino appellation since the 1890s. Today, the estate is in its fifth generation of winemaking and the wines are better than ever, crafted with a goal of maintaining sustainable viticulture practices and impeccable fruit quality, 100% of which is estate grown and hand selected.

The flagship 2016 Brunello di Montalcino is “a classic in the making” and boasts a stunning profile of black cherry, violet, herbs, and licorice (Vinous Media). The wine aged 36 months in Allier French oak barrels, along with an additional 12 months bottle aging. This wine is built to age, and will continue to mature for the next 2+ decades. Wine Advocate calls the single-vineyard 2015 Riserva Vigna Paganelli “Brunello with a capital B.” The Paganelli vineyard is 30 acres, and vines were planted in 1964. The vineyard grapes are only bottled as a single vineyard during exceptional vintages, and the last time this wine was made was 2012. The wine aged in large French oak barrels for four years, and like the Brunello, is definitely meant for aging. Expect a myriad of seamlessly interwoven flavors and aromas: dark cherry, plum, cedar, baking spice, and balsamic, that will undoubtedly continue to evolve over the coming years. We’ve also included the 2018 Rosso di Montalcino, a beautiful red ready to enjoy, bursting with notes of cranberry, blood orange, and cinnamon spice. Il Poggione also produces a Rosso Toscana, a Super Tuscan blend of 50% Sangiovese, 30% Merlot, and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2018 is a soft and fruit-forward wine, backed by a core of fresh acidity and plush tannins. Like the Rosso di Montalcino, this wine is easy to pair with a variety of foods and is ready to enjoy throughout the next few years. Showcasing the beauty and complexity of the Tuscan terroir, today’s wines are must-haves for your cellar. Secure your order today!
