Why Buy: These two driving, bold, powerhouse Cabernets – a 99-pointer from star winemaker Andy Erickson and a 97-pointer from a titan of New World winemaking – are Napa statement wines, built to last, and will reward you and your friends and clients now and for many, many years to come. If Huneeus, which produces both wines, doesn’t ring a bell, you’re sure to know their stellar label Quintessa (a "temple to a single Bordeaux-style Rutherford wine," in the words of Wine Spectator).

What They're Saying: "A magical Bordeaux blend from an incredible terroir as well as a great winemaker," Jeb Dunnuck enthused, in a soaring 99-point review. "It hits the palate with flawless balance, full-bodied richness, a great, great mid-palate, and a finish that keeps you coming back to the glass." The 97-point Faust The Pact Coombsville Napa Valley 2021 sent James Suckling into similar swoons. His tasting notes are as detailed as they are evocative: "So many graphite and pencil shaving aromas here with blue fruits. Slate and tar undertones. Black and red currants. Some ash. Medium-

bodied with open grained tannins. So much iron and rust with lead and mussel shell. Then turns to pine cone and cedar. Really

complex and flavor-intensive. Love to drink it now as a young wine. This evolves all the time. It will age

beautifully. “

The Stories:

Favia Erickson: Husband and wife Annie Favia and Andy Erickson like to say that their philosophy is simple, but don't be misled by their self-effacement. Their approach is simple, only in the sense that they have winnowed their process, through trial and error, and after years of effort, to its most essential principles. The Ericksons are purists, and what they seek is, not so much to attain some abstract goal of perfection, but instead to find the mark for each bottle they produce – to make wines that showcase, to the fullest extent possible, the character of their terroir and their vintage. That means gentle handling of the grapes, minimal intervention, and extreme vigilance in both the field and the cellar. That cellar, by the way: it's made of stone, and was constructed, in 1886, by the Carbone family, who were among the first Italians to set up camp in Napa. There's a reason these wines are some of the most soulful and expressive in all of Napa.

Faust: Chilean-born vintners Agustin Huneeus and his wife Valeria preside over a mini-empire in Napa's newest AVA, Combsville, the southernmost zone of the region, with such distinguished estates as Quintessa, Leviathan, and, yes, Favia Erickson all under their purview. Agustin's roots in the world of wine go back long and deep. In 1960, at the age of 27, he ascended to the position of CEO at Concha y Toro, which he helped to build into that country's largest and most renowned producer. After a stint at Seagram's, overseeing global operations, he returned to wine and, in 1999, launched Huneeus Vintners. What is primary for Agustin and Valeria, and what has driven their winemaking, is the understanding that great wine cannot be made in the cellar alone; it has to be birthed in the vineyard. To that end, they have put a premium on finding vineyard sites with extraordinary fruit. And then, later, with coaxing forth the character and soul of each varietal.

Our Tasting Notes:

Favia: A masterpiece. Every element is so perfectly integrated, so seamless, that you're tempted to pull back, as you sip, and contemplate how it was constructed. But resist that temptation – or save it for later. This is a wine of such pure, deep pleasure – from the heady aromatics to the superbly engineered mid-palate to the sinuous, endless finish -- that it's best, truly, just to submit.

Faust: Everything that matters is turned up high: the aromatics, the intensity, the graphite minerality. A remarkably complex wine, with chalky tannins, dark, brooding fruit, and a marvelously long, balanced finish. At once serious and hedonistic. Note: the wine was aged for 22 months in French oak.
