HUNDRED ACRE
NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA
WHY BUY: This perfect, 100-point Wraith and 98-point Warrior from Hundred Acre stand as some of the most extraordinary wines being made anywhere in the world today, and folks, we only have 20 cases of 3. These are statement wines of the highest order — absolute musts for any collection — and yet another triumph for kingmaker Jayson Woodbridge, whose limited-production Napa estate has taken home, yes, more than 60 perfect, 100-point scores since 2000. Woodbridge’s approach is fanatically detailed and defies conventional wisdom: custom-designed tanks, micro-misters straight from Dutch tulip farms, and harvest passes so selective that he’ll do 5-7 rounds through each vineyard, picking maybe one-tenth of the fruit each time to ensure utter perfection. We wouldn’t have him change a thing … and hope he never does. There’s magic and wonder in these bottles, folks.
WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: Decanter reviewed all 5 of these wines, and had to restrain itself from going overboard. It opted for poetry to describe the 100-point Wraith: "full of energy, magic, and mystery... the floral nuances and dried perfumed aromatics elevate this wine to something otherworldly.” It extolled the 98-point Warrior as “profound," with "an iron fist Cabernet, profoundly structured with exotic layers of fruit, spices, florals, and a wealth of ironstone minerals,” and was nearly as ecstatic about the 97-point Dreamer, a "gorgeous" wine with "an incredible panoply of mulled Christmas spices and warm berry pie compote... framed by a core of ultra-fine tannins” that it summed up as: "a meal unto itself.”
OUR TASTING NOTES: These wines operate in a different dimension entirely. The Wraith delivers that otherworldly complexity Decanter raved about: red and blackberry fruit laced with currants and sweet spices, but it's those floral nuances and dried perfumed aromatics that transport you somewhere else entirely. An almost spiritual experience. Those 40 months in impossibly fine-grained French oak created textures of incomparable velvetiness and smoothness. The Warrior is aptly named: this wine doesn't just enter your mouth, it conquers it, with a mineral intensity that tastes like it was extracted from ancient stone formations. There's a wildness here, sage and earth and something that whispers of California's untamed past. The Dreamer takes you on a completely different journey, all warmth and comfort and the kind of spice-laden richness that calls to mind holiday kitchens and contentment. It's hedonistic in the best way, the kind of wine that makes analysts like us forget that we're supposed to be taking notes. The Summer Dreams duo proves Woodbridge's genius extends beyond Cabernet; Golden Hour tastes like the Pacific Ocean decided to become wine, all salt air and power, while Stargazing has an almost ethereal quality that compels study … and keeps you coming back obsessively for another pour.
THE STORY: Sometimes a brush with mortality changes everything. When Jayson Woodbridge beat cancer at age 18, his perspective on life shifted permanently: suddenly, nothing short of excellence would suffice. The former investment banker from Toronto became a self-taught winemaker whose perfectionism borders on the obsessive, but in the best possible way. He employs two professional chefs just to cook for his family and team because, in his words, everything in life should be "at least excellent." This absolute drive for something bigger than ordinary human experience translates directly into his wines. Woodbridge will walk through vineyards inspecting each cluster individually, using irrigation systems borrowed from Dutch tulip farms, and even installing NASA-grade air filtration systems in his cellars. Since 2000, his wines have earned 100-point scores an estimated 60-70 times — nearly half from Robert Parker's Wine Advocate alone. Is it any wonder that collectors are sent scrambling for bottles every time a new release is announced?
FUN FACT: The name "Hundred Acre" comes from Winnie the Pooh's forest home. Woodbridge’s children used to play in a large forest they called "Hundred Acre," and the family spent countless happy hours there together.
OUR GUARANTEE: As always, we only buy and source directly from the winery, so rest assured: these wines will arrive in your hands with pristine provenance. Secure your bottles today!
