With few interruptions of rain and no hail, it’s “all smiles in Burgundy” (Clive Coates) as 2018 produced a bountiful crop that has every wine lover excited for possibly “one of the greatest ever vintages” (Tim Atkin). With Domaine de la Romanee-Conti co-owner Aubert de Villaine comparing 2018 to the exceptional and heralded 2015, we can’t help smacking our lips in anticipation. At the celebrated Hospices de Beaune wine auction last November, the quality was palpable - proven by its record breaking sales - with us getting a head start on the vintage by securing just a handful of lots. From vineyard holdings totaling 60 hectares donated throughout the centuries, just 15 white cuvees are produced and we were fortunate to get our hands on just two of these highly regarded yet limited Chardonnays. Today we couldn’t be more thrilled to offer our first, the Pouilly-Fuisse Cuvee Francoise Poisard.

Elegant and full of charm, the wines of Pouilly-Fuisse in Maconnais are delicate but distinguished, enhanced by its mineral character and natural richness. Comprised of four villages, the clay-limestone soils produce wines with opulent texture and structure. According to Louis Fabrice Latour, president of Maison Louis Latour, the white wine harvest for 2018 may be one of the biggest ever recorded, especially in Maconnais, which is great news for the region – resulting in extremely healthy yields that show off the sunshine of the vintage and have a wonderful sense of restraint. With the AOC of Pouilly-Fuisse established in 1936, there are no Premier Crus, however some climats stand head and shoulders above the rest. Our cuvee today comes from three of those climats located in the village of Chaintre, the southern-most village known especially for its limestone and marl terroir similar to that of the Cote d’Or, including Les Plessys, Les Robees and Les Chevrieres – making it absolutely perfect for Chardonnay. From a total of just 1.5 hectares of vines, with some over 90 years old and nothing younger than 35 years old, Les Plessys and its deep clay soils contributes sensational roundness and power, whereas Les Robees and Les Chevrieres and their thin layer of limestone soil over rock gives the wine remarkable minerality and aromatics.

From land bequeathed by Francoise Poisard in 1994 and 2012, the cuvee is only one of two located outside of the Cote D’Or for the Domaines des Hospices de Beaune and we couldn’t be more excited when it delivers from France. As the wine is being sold “En Primeur” (wine futures), this beautiful Pouilly-Fuisse is currently ageing in the cellars of Au Pied du Mont Chauve in Chassagne-Montrachet and will ship directly from their cellars to your preferred store in 2020, with 6 bottle orders in their original wood case. Like our previous offers from the Hospices, our allocation is very limited (only 70 six-packs) and the wine is available on a first-come, first served basis. Secure your orders at the best prices available before they go up forever for this highly anticipated vintage!
