HICKENBOTHAM CLARENDON VINEYARD

MCLAREN VALE, AUSTRALIA 2018

Power. Elegance. Ageability.

This is the trifecta for the reds we seek and source, and today we're proud to bring you a pair that delivers amply on all three counts — and for about half of what you might expect to pay for reds of comparable quality from France or Napa.

It was true a decade ago, and it remains true today: the McLaren Vale, in South Australia, is one of the most dazzling value propositions in all of the wine world, and these two single-vineyard beauties from the 2018 vintage are the latest data points. Make that: delicious data points.

The Hickinbotham Brooks Road, a savory Shiraz, earned a highly coveted spot in the top 50 of Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2021, thanks to an "expansive" palate, "pure finesse," a "beautifully balanced acidity," and a "silky finish." The Halliday Wine Companion was equally enamored, awarding 98 points and noting the way it manages to be both "extremely complex and intense" and "perfectly balanced."

Of the Hickinbotham Trueman, a Cabernet, The Halliday Wine Companion awarded 97 points and wrote: "This is a superb Cabernet. ... It lays down oodles of flavor, not to mention tannin, but it's fragrant and frisky at the same time. One sip and you can't let go; it has you in its thrall."

Hickinbotham has long been one of the most esteemed producers in the McLaren Vale — it's just that, until fairly recently, the estate was content to operate in the background. Its 85-hectare vineyard, set down in 1971 among an idyll of undulating, terraced hills, produced fruit for many of the country's most legendary producers, including Penfolds and Clarendon Hills, and only began to put out wines under its own label ten years ago, when it was purchased by the Jackson Family.

Winemakers Christopher Carpenter and Peter Fraser, along with viticultural expert Michael Lane, have always been among the most exceedingly conscientious and thoughtful producers, both in the vineyard and in the cellar, and we see the literal fruit of that care and consideration here. Both wines are made from old-vine, single-vineyard, hand-picked grapes, with (as ever) only gentle extraction methods used to produce the juice.

If you're looking for wines that wallop, but that don't stint on complexity and finesse, you can hardly do better than these two.

But hurry — we'll have both on hand for the next week only, and with special Concierge Family pricing, we're not expecting either to stick around past the weekend.
