Chris Carpenter has long received acclaim for his extremely limited production wines: Lokoya, Cardinale and La Jota. Synonymous with power, ageability and finesse, his wines are the darling of any collector (and often boast triple digit price tags to prove it), but his expertise extends far past California. The stunning lineup of Hickinbotham Vineyard wines from Australia’s McLaren Vale are crafted under Carpenter's meticulous eye, along with longtime friend and partner winemaker, Peter Fraser. We’re proud to present two wines from the portfolio today: the 2017 ‘Brooks Road’ Shiraz and ‘The Revivalist’ Merlot, both of which offer up a taste of Carpenter’s “signature” style—opulent yet balanced, concentrated yet poised. Special Concierge pricing will be available for one week, so don’t delay in placing your orders!

Hickinbotham Vineyard was first planted to Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz in 1971, and is situated on the high-elevation hills of Clarendon, a distinct subregion within McLaren Vale in South Australia. Clarendon’s elevation affords it cooler temperatures than most of McLaren Vale, as well as the more intense diurnal weather patterns that mirror those of other great winegrowing regions of the world. The Hickinbotham vineyard itself historically produced fruit for many of Australia’s most iconic producers, but was only first bottled under its own label in 2012. Since then, the estate has continued to garner accolades for its portfolio of highly expressive, site-specific wines.

Awarded 95 points and named a Top Cellar Selection by Wine Enthusiast in 2020, the 2017 ‘Brooks Road’ Shiraz is named for the street on which the vineyard is located. The grapes were exclusively hand-picked, and the wine aged 15 months in Burgundy-coopered barrels, with frequent rack-and-returns to minimize filtration at bottling. The wine unveils aromas of blackberry, black pepper, and blood orange, with firm yet integrated tannins and an impressive finish. The Hickinbotham team’s goal in crafting ‘The Revivalist’ Merlot is to offer a “full expression of the variety,” and the 2017 vintage does just that. The Merlot was sourced from vines planted in 1989 and 1976, and grapes were hand-picked and whole berry sorted. The wine matured for 15 months in fine-grain Bordeaux-coopered barrels (25% new), and this vintage offers up a layered profile of black cherry, sweet tobacco, lilac, and espresso. Though they are drinking deliciously and are hard to resist now, the wines will certainly continue to reward for many years. Don’t miss your opportunity to experience one of the region’s best!
