To our good friends in New Jersey: there are fewer than 45 bottles in the entire state of this superb whisky from the great Hibiki — aged for 30 years, and the epitome of the blending art. If you love Japanese whisky, you'll be hard put to find anything as smooth, as refined, as balanced as this one is. The wonder, for us, is that, as delicate as it is, it delivers surprising depths — first, on the nose, with its hints of leather and dried fruit, then on the palate, which opens with rounded sweetness (brown sugar and apricot jam) and then extends into something duskier and, dare we say it, sultrier. The finish is long and graceful, redolent of cinnamon and that distinctive (and characteristic) touch of Mizuna oak. Don't sleep on this. It will become a fixture on your bar cart, and a conversation piece at your table.
