A number of Spain’s legendary bodegas call Ribera del Duero home, including icons Pingus and Vega Sicilia, easily making the region one of the country’s premier locales for top, age-worthy wines. Producers here focus on the local strain of Tempranillo, called Tinto Fino, and have delighted us with bold, brawny and delicious reds that are generally deeper and richer than their counterparts from Rioja. But not all wines are created equally. Today we’re featuring one of the pioneers of the region, Hermanos Pérez Pascuas, whose distinct and highly coveted portfolio includes “some of the most elegant” wines in all of Ribera del Duero (Josh Raynolds, Vinous). For us, this is a first and we couldn’t be more thrilled to offer the most recent vintage releases of three of their most sought-after reds, including their flagship Gran Selección Gran Reserva.
 

The Pérez Pascuas family is among the veterans of Ribera del Duero, producing classically-styled Tempranillos since 1980 and helping establish the region’s status as D.O. two years later. The winery was founded by three brothers, Benjamín, Manuel and Adolfo, who recognized their property’s potential for producing outstanding Tinto Fino. Located just northwest of the town of Rao, the property benefits from cooler weather compared to other sectors of the D.O. which contributes to a more elegant, age-worthy side of Tempranillo. Today the winery totals 145 hectares of estate-owned vineyards planted to 90% Tinto Fino, with a number of vines easily over 25 years old and some over 80 years old. The bodega is a critic darling, often praised for producing “good-old-time Riberas” as well as their commitment to craft Tempranillos with balance, finesse and longevity and a “character of yesteryear” (Luis Gutiérrez, Wine Advocate).
 

Today we’re featuring three reds from their exceptional lineup. First is the single-vineyard reserva ‘La Navilla’ which takes its name from the plot surrounding the winery, the estate’s highest elevation. 100% Tinto Fino, wine comes from grapes that were hand harvested, vinified then matured in French oak for 20 months, with an additional 12 months ageing in bottle. Bright red in color, it has great structure, with earthy, concentrated flavors that makes this exceptional for enjoying now or cellaring. Second is their Gran Reserva, which is 90% Tinto Fino and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon picked from plots comprised of 60-65 year old vines. The Gran Reserva was matured for one year in French barriques plus an additional year in American oak. The wine was further aged in bottle for three years prior to release. Complex and opulent, this will easily age for decades. The final wine featured today is the family’s flagship, Gran Selección Gran Reserva. This 100% Tinto Fino comes from a single vineyard comprised of 87-year-old vines and is only produced in exceptional years. Beautifully structured and powerful, the wine was matured for 26 months in French and American oak ( half of it new) and was then aged for an additional 4 years in bottle. With excellent depth of fruit and fine, grippy tannins, this one is built for the long haul.
