10 years ago, most of the world didn’t even realize that Portugal made dry red wines. 5 years ago, the region of Alentejo was virtually unheard of. Now with Portugal at the top of the list for tourism and European football, everyone seems to be looking for the incredible values in wine that have been flooding out of the country. Yet when it comes to the region of Alentejo, I’ve been consistently surprised more by the quality of the wines rather than just the value.
If you’ve ever visited or thought about visiting, you probably know about the incredible beaches of the Algarve on the southern coast, two and a half hours south of Lisbon. Alentejo covers the southern third of the country, between Lisbon and the Algarve. The terroir here is diverse and the climate is hot, giving Alentejo its own interpretation to the many indigenous varieties that grow in the region. In more recent years, international varieties such as Cabernet, Syrah, and Alicante Bouschet (Grenache) have been transplanted with much success and there are a lot of parallels here with what happened in Tuscany.
Today’s Roll out the Barrel offer is for a “Super-Alentejo”, with a cepage of 45% Syrah, 35% Alicante Bouschet, and 20% Touriga Nacional. Each variety takes on a different role in the wine. The Syrah brings structure, earth, and spice; the Alicante Bouschet adds a dimension of juicy dark fruit; and the Touriga Nacional pulls everything together with a floral lift. The wine reminds me of a cross between a Cote Rotie and a Chateauneuf du Pape - but at a fraction of the price.
The vineyards are farmed organically, and in the winery the grapes are fully destemmed followed by soft crushing. Maceration and fermentation take place over 12 days followed by gentle pressing. The wine spends 12 months in one and two-year-old French and American oak barrels before bottling.
Today’s Herdade Do Peso Colheita Red 2014 is dense yet incredibly drinkable. In fact, this would be perfect with any summer grilling that is coming up, although it could easily be put away for some longer-term aging.  And here’s the kicker – at $14.97 (25% off) a bottle when purchased by the case, this is one that you should act quickly on as we anticipate selling out!
