HENRI CHAMPLIAU, CREMANT DE BOURGOGNE

BURGUNDY, FRANCE NV

Why Buy: Make that -- Why Buy By the Case: Less than $25 a bottle for a 96-pointer and a 95-pointer that each took home a Gold Medal at the Decanter World Wine Awards.

What They're Saying: Decanter gushed over the 96-point Brut Authentique, calling it "lush" and "creamy," with a "textured mousse and a mouthwateringly vibrant acidity. Long, crisp, zesty and luxurious.” Of the 95-point Crémant de Bourgogne Brut Rosé, it wrote: "Bursting with vibrant pink grapefruit and red berry aromas; a complexity of brioche, hibiscus and lime zest with a creamy mousse and an elegant, saline finish."

The Story: Henri Champliau may be a young company, but it's got an old soul. In 2016, Alexandre Graffant, a négociant with a vast network of growers at his disposal, set up shop in the heart of the Côte Chalonnaise region, in Burgundy. From the start, he set himself a succinct mission statement: "no middleman." Graffant works one-on-one with his growers, selecting grapes from only the very best sources throughout Burgundy (and typically rejecting 2/3rds of what he's offered) to produce his Crémant de Bourgogne and Brut Authentique. In both these wines, Pinot Noir is predominant, with small percentages of Chardonnay and Gamay in the Crémant de Bourgogne Rosé; in the Crémant de Bourgogne Brut Authentique, Chardonnay is the supporting player, with no appearance of Gamay. Each of these wines is vinified separately in small lots before assemblage and treated to 15 months of aging sur latte

Our Tasting Notes: The driver of both of these wines is Pinot Noir, which brings strength and complexity, while the Chardonnay brings freshness and energy (and the Gamay, in the case of the Brut Authentique, adds a delicate floral dimension). The 15 months of aging sur lattes is evident in every rich, textured sip of these cuvées, and gives them a depth and maturity that belies their age, not to mention an intensity that we absolutely did not expect (but that you can best believe we surely reveled in).

ABV: Both sparkling wines are 12.5%.

What to Pair Them With: Seared tuna, sushi, pan-roasted salmon with shallots and butter, omelets and quiches.

Fun Fact: Henri Champliau was the name of Graffant's grandfather, a horse racing enthusiast and owner. In fact, he owned Wild Miss, which he sold to the actor Eddie Constantine ("Alphaville," "The Long Good Friday," "Beware of a Holy Whore") in the 1960s. It was one of the greatest horses of its generation.
