What happens when you combine one of Napa Valley’s most historic vineyards, the skills of 100-point winemaker Mia Klein, estate mountain fruit, the drive and passion of the Palmaz Family and a state of the art 18-story underground cave system that hand crafts a 100% gravity flow wine? An elegant yet ageable masterpiece - Hagen’s Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon.

As one of the most prestigious winemakers in the Valley, Mia Klein has a trophy case of 100-point wines under her belt, with a resume that boasts a slew of blue chip show-stoppers including Dalle Valle, Spottswoode, Araujo, Chappellet and Palmaz Vineyards. With Mia’s pedigree teamed up with four decades of experience in winemaker Tina Mitchell (who previously worked alongside the world-renowned Andre Tchelistcheff and now at Palmaz Vineyards), this wine really gets the all-star treatment.

Hagen’s Reserve is not only crafted from the family-owned mountainous Palmaz estate, it also receives the same white glove treatment as their signature wines. While Henry Hagen may have created the very first winery in the town of Napa in 1881, today it’s a fusion of steadfast tradition and state-of-the-art technology. The family purchased the estate in 1996 and built a one-of-kind winery into an 18-story cavern at the base of Napa’s Mount George. Meanwhile, Christian Palmaz took 4 years to personally create a system that monitors real-time active fermentation of their 24 distinct blocks from their secluded Napa Estate. This system provides a live visual thermal image of what is transpiring within the tanks, empowering the winemakers more creative time with a glass in hand and less time in a laboratory.

While many collectors may be familiar with the term “Gravity Fed” from some of Napa’s classic cellar selections such as Opus One, Quintessa; or iconic Bordeaux such as Cheval Blanc and Cos D’Estournel, gravity winemaking is still a relatively unknown benefit and rarely accomplished. This process simply uses the natural flow of gravity to gently move the wine along its numerous stages during the winemaking process; opposed to using abrasive pumps, which heavily agitates the wine. Hagen’s Reserve goes one step further, as it is gravity finished through the bottling; hence the need for an 18-story winery…yielding a profound, ethereal wine of the highest distinction.

This is a truly hand-crafted limited-production find, with only a mere 980 six-packs of the 2015 Hagen’s Reserve produced. Aged 17 months in 100% French oak and sporting a traditional blend of 83% Cabernet, 12% Merlot, 3% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the wine is coated in dark chocolate, raspberries, and leather that gently unfolds into an unrelenting, endless finish. Not only is this one of the best wines of the vintage, it is a world-class value compared to other icons of its class. Drink now or savor for the next 15 years.
