I’ve always regarded Spanish wine as a type of conduit—back to tradition, to the past. The medieval town of Toro especially resonates with me. Unknown and extreme, Toro yields familiar wine that is somehow exotic. Located in the Zamora province of northwest Castilla y Léon on a high plateau near the Portuguese border, Toro is a land of harsh realities. Rocky vineyards, scorching hot summers followed by bone-chilling winters, this severe climate is home to only the strongest of vines. Tinta de Toro, a perfectly adapted clone of Tempranillo, is the shining star of Toro, and many of the vines (planted on ungrafted, pre-phylloxera roots) range from 90–140 years of age. It is the history of the vines and their resilience that is Toro’s greatest treasure. Did you know the wine Christopher Columbus brought with him on his epic journey to discover America came from Toro?

Winemaking here predates the Romans, but it is the recent winemakers who have shone a bright light on this region. Fifteen years ago there were only 10 wineries in the Toro DO, but top winemakers from Spain and Portugal continue to invest in this region, and today there are more than fifty. World-renowned winemaker Cristiano Van Zeller—whose family are producers of the legendary Port, Quinta do Noval—recognized the enormous potential of this dynamic wine region. Cristiano, along with oenologists Oscar Garrote and Pipa Ortega, began the passion project Hacienda Terra d'Uro to produce authentic wines that could express the unique terroir of Toro. The winery produces three wines: the entry level ‘Finca La Rana,’ the ‘Seleccion,’ and the top wine ‘Uro.’

The 94-point Parker-rated 2014 Terra d'Uro Tinta de Toro is hand harvested from 90-year-old, organically cultivated vines. The wine is aged for 20 months in new French oak barrels, followed by 12 months of bottle age. Dark and inky in color, this is a full-bodied, beautifully structured wine that expresses the Toro power with elegance. For enthusiasts and collectors of Tempranillo, Toro is the place for exploration.
