GROTH VINEYARDS, OAKCROSS PROPRIETARY RED

NAPA VALLEY, CALIFORNIA 2019

We were taken with the inaugural vintage of Oakcross, which the Napa Valley stalwart Groth Vineyards issued last year, but the 2019 has more than made good on the initial promise of the 2018: this is a flat-out stunning achievement – a lushly rich, powerful wine with beautifully integrated tannins and a long, sensual finish that demonstrates, yet again, why Oakville is arguably the finest Cabernet Sauvignon appellation in the U.S.

Wine Spectator echoes our enthusiasm. "A dynamic blend," it gushed, in a 94-point review, "combining deep structure with finesse and polish."

We love it when Napa winemakers work on a small-scale and look to limit yields, and the family-owned Groth – creator of the first 100-point wine in all of Napa – has made that philosophy a central plank of the Oakcross project (the name alludes to Oakville Cross Road, which the property was initially called when Dennis and Judy Groth bought it, in 1981).

The fact that only 1,150 cases were made should tell you most of what you need to know about the care and craft that went into this bottle.

But we can tell you a bit more, too. Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon predominate, both estate-grown, with the former occupying an ever-so-slight advantage in the mix, and the wine aged for 22 months in barrel. Credit its striking softness and dimension to the Merlot, and its heft and length to the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Together, they make for a wine of considerable balance, even elegance – a wine, you might say, with Old World structure and charm, to go along with its New World fruit-forwardness and energy.

We think you're going to love it as much as we do, and can't wait for you to open this in the company of friends – for all its nuance and detailing, this is a crowd-pleaser of a red, and will pair beautifully with a range of dishes: a rack of lamb; a thick and juicy grilled steak; even – yes – bacon cheeseburgers.

Take advantage of Concierge Family pricing to snag this gem of a red, and remember, friends: we always buy direct and we only source direct, so you can rest assured that your wine will arrive in your hands with pristine provenance.
