The Story: Gran Centenario Gallardo was founded nearly 170 years ago by Lázaro Gallardo, a tavern owner who stands tall in history as the very first Maestro Tequilero, or tequila Master Distiller. Much of the foundation that Gallardo created remains to this day. The company, still family-run, is a fixture in the Mexican highlands of Jalisco, with all production and distillation done at the historic ex-La Hacienda Los Camichines. And its methods today are the same as they were in Gallardo's time, with hand-harvested agave pinas fed into the distillery's masonry furnaces for 48 hours, after which they are fermented and double-distilled. Gallardo was both a traditionalist and an innovator. He created a proprietary process, used to this day, known as Selección Suave, which blends new distillations with extra-aged tequilas from different barrels to create greater richness and complexity.
The Bottle: The soaring, Art Deco-inspired glass bottle is capped by a pair of silver angel wings, an homage to the angel long ago that Gallardo asked to protect his agave plants.
Our Tasting Notes: To start with, this is just a gorgeous color, more reminiscent of a Cognac than most tequilas: a dark amber with shimmering touches of gold. On the nose, you'll experience the manifold benefits of all that long oaking and cask finishing: this is a wonderful invitation, resonant and complex. The palate is deep and rich, fairly bursting with notes of figs, banana cream, red fruits, and nuts, along with a subtle earthy undertone that runs its length.
