What makes this bottling so special?
Well, a number of things.
As whisky fanatics well know, more and more emphasis is being placed these days on what a distillery does before barrel selection and aging. And with good reason: a whisky is only as good as its raw materials. Glenmorangie’s Master Distiller Bill Lumsden — “Dr. Bill," as everyone refers to him — has been as ardent as anyone in this unofficial movement. Determined to capture “the essence of Glenmorangie’s homeland" in a grain-to-glass single malt, he planted barley on the lands that surround the distillery. When it was harvested, he chose exactly how the grain would be dried and malted. Only enough barley can be harvested from the estate each year for one or two weeks of production at the Distillery, making this single-estate crop particularly rare.
And wonderfully unique: The resultant malt produces a uniquely creamy spirit.
While Batch #1 boasted prominent notes of honeycomb, white chocolate, and mandarin orange, Batch #2 delivers a decadent profile of candied vanilla on the nose, with hints of orange blossom, ginger, cinnamon spice, and poached pears carrying through to the palate.
In our tastings, we were especially struck by its smoothness and softness, a function, no doubt, of the 15 years it spent in hand-selected, first-fill American White Oak ex-Bourbon barrels.
Glenmorangie has been producing benchmark Highland Scotches since 1843, but Dr. Bill continues to find new ways to add nuance, complexity, and depth to the distillery's range of whiskeys. And with The Cadboll Estate line, he might have crafted his most gorgeous statement yet.
