Honors: Its predecessor in the line, Cadboll Estate Batch #2, was awarded Double Gold at the 2021 San Francisco World Spirits Competition and Best Single Malt Scotch, 15 Year Old, at the 2021 International Whisky Competition.
The Story: Glenmorangie has been producing benchmark scotches since 1843, but Dr. Bill has refused to live in the storied past. An irrepressible spirit, he continues to find new ways to add nuance, complexity, and depth to the distillery's core range of whiskeys. With his Cadboll Estate line, he set himself the goal of capturing “the essence of Glenmorangie’s homeland." How? By planting barley on the lands that surround the distillery in the Scottish Highlands, and distilling this homegrown crop in Scotland's tallest stills to create the estate's first-ever single-estate whiskies. Only enough barley can be harvested from the estate each year for one or two weeks of production at the distillery, making this single-estate crop a precious commodity.
The Specs: Selected from two Cadboll harvests, the 2023 edition combines a classic, bourbon-matured Glenmorangie with a selected portion of Cadboll barley stock. The spirit was then finished in casks that previously held Amontillado – a sherry that is the very quintessence of Jerez, the wine’s heartland in Spain – and aged it for 15 years.
Our Tasting Notes: On the nose, there's an initial burst of aromatics, with touches of honey, hazelnuts, mandarin oranges and soft, sweet toffee, with trailing notes of sweet barley and baked peaches. On the palate, it delivers a one-two punch of perfectly calibrated spice and sweetness, shot through with flavors of honey, gingerbread, hazelnut, praline, fudge, toffee, and just a touch of clove. The mouthfeel is superb: creamy and rich.
ABV: 43% (86 proof).
Fun Fact: Dr. Bill has been honored five times with the International Whisky Competition's award for Master Distiller of the Year.
