GLENGOYNE MIZUNARA CASK SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY

HIGHLANDS, SCOTLAND

WHY BUY:
We’re bringing you this luxurious, ultra-limited release for a special Cyber Monday deal of $80 OFF. Luxurious AND unprecedented: this marks the first time the legendary Glengoyne, founded in 1833, has matured a whisky in mizunara, a finicky wood that requires enormous expertise to handle but that also (because of its porousness) delivers enormous rewards, including those distinctive incense-like aromas that have made Japanese oak so coveted among distillers. This is the third release in their celebrated Oak Masters’ Series (conceived as a showcase of the world's finest oaks), and for this one, Glengoyne aged it for 16 years (10 in their classic first-fill sherry and refill casks, and an additional six in mizunara), resulting in a single malt that is both recognizably Glengoyne in its patient, exquisitely-developed distillation and also something completely (and excitingly) new.

WHAT THEY’RE SAYING:
This Highlands icon took home the ultimate recognition in 2021 when it was honored as “The Best Luxury Whisky in the World” at the Luxury Lifestyle Awards, no small feat in a category flooded with contenders charging twice the price. But  accolades are nothing new to Glengoyne; it’s also won a slew of hardware in recent years, including: Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Gold at the International Spirits Competition, and a Master designation from the Spirits Business Scotch Masters.

OUR TASTING NOTES:
The kind of experiment that makes you wonder why it took them so long to try it. The nose is something else again, taking you places you’ve never been. The notes of toffee and sandalwood play with and against one another, with a third quality in the braid that can only be described as incense (a subtle note, mind you, and one that conjures up walking into an ancient temple). On the palate, the complexity only ratchets up more: an oily note of coconut appears out of nowhere, followed by a countervailing note of crisp apple, while warm spices continue to build in the background, along with hints of milk chocolate and truffles. What's remarkable is how none of these developments come across as forced; they emerge organically, naturally, and the overall effect is that of integration and softness. The finish stretches out with that long, sweet character you’ve come to expect of Glengoyne, along with a wonderful and welcome touch of creaminess. You’ll be hard put not to reach for another sip immediately, just to experience that textural richness all over again.

THE STORY:
In the whisky world's endless pursuit of efficiency and quarterly earnings, Glengoyne has executed one of the most successful contrarian strategies in modern spirits. While other distilleries have opted to modernize their processes and shortened their production cycles, this Highland operation has doubled down on what economists call "patient capital": the kind of long-term thinking that prioritizes decades over fiscal years. Their philosophy is elegantly simple: for every minute most whiskies spend in their stills, Glengoyne spends three. It's an approach that borders on the obsessive, but it's also what separates them from the crowd of accelerated, mass-market single malts flooding the shelves. Slow distillation allows flavors to develop naturally, creating complexity that can't be manufactured through shortcuts or additives. Their casks undergo six years of preparation, the longest in the industry, because they've learned that patience has a pay-off. Mizunara oak represents the ultimate test of this philosophy — a wood so difficult to work with that it's prone to leakage and requires expert craftsmanship, but when handled properly, as it is here, delivers gloriously, with notes that are simply impossible to come by otherwise.

ABV:
53.4% ABV (106.8 proof).

FUN FACT:
Glengoyne operates one of Scotland's most sustainable distilleries, and has even installed a specialized wetland system to recycle their waste. It’s little wonder they’ve earned a Gold accreditation from Green Tourism.
