GLENGOYNE LEGACY SERIES CHAPTER 3 SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY

HIGHLANDS, SCOTLAND

Why Buy: Glengoyne whiskies spend nearly three times as long in the stills as other brands, but this exceptional bottling from the Highlands icon — 2021 winner of the "Best Luxury Whisky in the World" (Luxury Lifestyle Awards) — offers, in addition, a masterclass in casking. It uses not one, not two, not three, but four different casks (first-fill bourbon barrels, American oak sherry casks, European oak sherry casks, and hand-selected refill bourbon and sherry casks) to achieve a superior complexity and depth.

The Story: Conceived as an homage to Sir Arthur John Tedder, the Glengoyne exciseman (or tax collector) who worked to prevent smuggling and helped to secure the legal definition of whisky, this is the 3rd expression in Glengoyne's legacy release series and, we think, the most approachable of an already approachable collection (whose previous two bottlings each took home Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition). As anyone familiar with the Glengoyne story will tell you, that quality — an eminent approachability — has long been the company's watchword. In fact, it goes back to the earliest whiskies produced by the distillery, which was founded in 1833. Departing from the model of many malt whiskies, the distillery doesn't use peat smoke to dry the barley but simply lets the natural air of the Highlands do the slow, gentle work. That lack of peat is why some fans consider these whiskies to be closer in character to those of the Lowlands, with their smooth sippability.

Specs: Made with 100% Golden Promise malted barley, the same barley favored by the great Bruichladdich — a low-yield crop that is universally regarded for its consistent high quality — and distilled with water from picture-perfect Loch Carron.

Our Tasting Notes: Seduces early, from its deep gold appearance to its nose of apple strudel, cinnamon sticks, pear, and berry jam, with a trailing character of deep sherry notes. The palate is rich and chewy, calling forth tastes of spiced buns, tarte tatin, creamy sherry, and booze-soaked raisins. The finish opens out into fruit, most notably pineapple, before deepening into dark chocolate and spice.

ABV: 48% (96 proof) and un-chill filtered.

Fun Fact: If Glengoyne seems stylistically more aligned with Lowland expressions, it might have something to do with the fact that the street on which the distillery sits is literally the southernmost border for Highland scotch.
