GLENGOYNE 18 YEAR SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY
HIGHLANDS, SCOTLAND

WHY BUY:
When Glengoyne first released this marvelously mature 18 year, demand was so great that stocks ran out likethat, so when we heard they were gearing up for a relaunch, we pounced. This is a beaut of a single malt, folks, born of Glengoyne's signature triple-time distillation process and their industry-leading six-year cask preparation program — a richly textured dram that comes by its complex flavors the right and proper way. And at just $119 a bottle, we find ourselves asking yet again: how do these whisky wizards manage to pack in so much sophistication, complexity, and maturity for so little?

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING:
This Highlands icon took home the ultimate recognition in 2021 when it was honored as “The Best Luxury Whisky in the World” at the Luxury Lifestyle Awards, no small feat in a category flooded with contenders charging twice the price. But  accolades are nothing new to Glengoyne; it’s also won a slew of hardware in recent years, including: Double Gold at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition, Gold at the International Spirits Competition, and a Master designation from the Spirits Business Scotch Masters.

THE STORY:
In the whisky world's endless pursuit of efficiency and quarterly earnings, Glengoyne has executed one of the most successful contrarian strategies in modern spirits. While some other distilleries have opted to modernize their processes and shortened their production cycles, this Highland operation doubled down on what economists call "patient capital”: the kind of long-term thinking that prioritizes decades over fiscal years. Their philosophy is elegantly simple: for every minute most whiskies spend in their stills, Glengoyne spends three. It's an approach that borders on the obsessive, but it's also what separates them from the crowd of accelerated, mass-market single malts flooding the shelves. Slow distillation allows flavors to develop naturally, creating complexity that can't be manufactured through shortcuts or additives. Their casks undergo six years of preparation, the longest in the industry, because they've learned that patience pays off … and that when you think in generations rather than quarters, you’re focused on the right and true path.

OUR TASTING NOTES:
Here's what hit us when we first nosed this whisky: freshness and vibrance, in the form of ripe red apple and melon, but not in that cloying, artificial way you sometimes get with over-sherried expressions. And then comes this beautiful downshift into warm porridge with brown sugar that feels both comforting and sophisticated. The palate delivers exactly what that complex nose promises: macerated fruits and marzipan up front, then a progression through walnuts, warm spices, and dry cocoa before landing on a lingering note of beautiful Seville marmalade. But what impressed us most, here, is the texture. Rich and full-bodied without being heavy, it delivers that perfect coating sensation that tells you you’re in the presence of a well-aged whisky. The finish stretches out long, warm, and dry, leaving you contented and happy, and appreciative of the way time works its subtle magic.

ABV:
43% (86 proof).

FUN FACT:
Glengoyne operates one of Scotland's most sustainable distilleries, installing a specialized wetland system to recycle their waste and earning Gold accreditation from Green Tourism.
