Boasting a diverse range of varieties and climate, South Africa is offering an exciting assortment of wines from both new and established wineries that are knocking it out of the park at unbelievable price points. One of the leading innovative wineries whose quality has been instantly recognized over the last decade is Glenelly Estate, purchased by May-Eliane de Lencquesaing of Chateau Pichon-Lalande in 2003. With the estate located in Stellenbosch next door to Rustenberg, one of the country’s premier established producers for red wine, the owner went all out and brought on her Technical Director at Pichon-Lalande (who would later become the Technical Director at Chateau Margaux) to oversee the property’s early development. With Luke O’Cuinneagain as winemaker, who spent time at Screaming Eagle and worked under the tutelage of Hubert de Bouard at Chateau Angelus, the winery is hitting its stride and quickly becoming an icon in the region. We were able to acquire a limited quantity of the estate’s flagship wine, Lady May, and today we couldn’t be more thrilled to offer the 2011 vintage.

After 28 years of running Pichon-Lalande and selling that property in 2006, May-Eliane began focusing on Glenelly, which had been producing wine since 1783. Located on eastern-facing slopes of Simonsberg Mountain at an altitude of 1,200 feet, Bordeaux varieties were introduced to take advantage of some of the oldest viticultural soils in the world – nearly 600 million years old. Like the Medoc region of Bordeaux, the vineyards here are located between two bodies of water, the Atlantic and Indian oceans, which is conducive to excellent grape ripening. With a cooler microclimate compared to the western-facing slopes of most Stellenbosch vineyards, the grapes have a more even and slower maturation process, producing wine with more character and complexity. Using wild yeast fermentation and some of France’s most renowned barrel makers (including Taransaud, Boutes and Sylvain) no expense is spared to produce this silky and seamless knockout.

Comprised of 85% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Petit Verdot and 5% Merlot and aged for 24 months in oak, the 2011 has a captivating bouquet of dark brambly blackberry, cassis and violet, complemented by notes of black licorice, espresso and graphite. Deliciously dark and brooding, the wine has firm, chewy tannins and a silky finish, making this an incredible deal for a wine that is absolutely delicious now but will age beautifully for another decade. For up to 30% off and less than $35 a bottle, we recommend placing your orders quickly as our limited allocation is sure to go fast.
