GLEN GRANT EXPLORATION SERIES NO. 1
SINGLE MALT SCOTCH WHISKY
SPEYSIDE, SCOTLAND
Glen Grant has done something it's never done before — finished its signature Speyside malt in rum casks, giving it gorgeous notes of tropical sweetness, baking spice, and dark brown sugar that open up and enliven the powerful malt.
The result is so distinct, so nuanced, so drinkable, so sublime that as soon as we conclude our tasting we sat down to craft this email. That’s how excited we are to bring it to you.
Exploration No. 1 is the inaugural release of a bold new series in which Glen Grant travels the world for inspiration and collaboration. First up is the Caribbean, with Greig Stables, the Master Distiller, asking what happens when you cross Glen Grant's delicately aromatic house character with the warm, sugary exuberance of the islands.
A kind of magic, is the answer. And at only 450 cases produced, that makes this something special.
After maturation in bourbon barrels (the house's vessel of choice for preserving the light, fruity delicacy that is the Glen Grant signature), the spirit is transferred into hand-selected rum casks, each one individually nosed by Stables before it makes the cut.
The rum influence isn’t over-the-top. It’s subtler and more insinuating. Ripe banana and toasted coconut arrive like unexpected guests who turn out to be — ta da! — the life of the party. Spice and rich dark sugar follow. Beneath it all, like the chassis of a car, keeping everything together, is that characteristic note of cut-apple freshness and that almost ethereal lightness that we turn to Glen Grant to find.
Glen Grant has been producing that signature in Rothes since 1840, when brothers James and John Grant founded the distillery on the banks of the Burn of Rothes. Its style across nearly two centuries has changed pretty much not at all. It remains, as ever, a fresh, light, and aromatic single malt, produced by stills whose shapes remain virtually unaltered from the originals: nearly-square boil bulbs with purifying chambers in the lyne arm that strip out heavier elements and send them back into the still.
The result is a single malt like none other, with an almost uncommon delicacy, which is why the Italians, who understand a thing or two or twelve about refinement, adopted it as their own.
Exploration No. 1 is bottled at 48% ABV (96 proof, non-chill filtered), which means every note Stables coaxed from those rum casks arrives in the glass intact; nothing has been smoothed away in the name of consistency.
We’d recommend pouring it neat first. Then add a drop of water if you're curious to see what opens up. Either way, clear some time. This is a whisky that reveals itself slowly, and rewards the patient.
It's also not long for our shelves.
Limited quantities, inaugural release, a series that promises a new expression only twice a year … your window here is narrow, folks. Secure yours today!
