Here we find Malbecs as they ought to be: big, meaty wines that also deliver clarity, suppleness, and even, yes, elegance.

What They're Saying: "Seamless, powerful, generous," Wine Spectator gushed over the Icône WOW 2016, while it hailed the Malbec Cahors 2018, which it awarded 92 points, as "suave, polished," with "sanguine aromas and flavors." Reviewing the Cahors Cuveé 6666 2018, James Suckling awarded 92 points, calling it a "structured and balanced" wine "with a creamy texture and a flavorful finish."

The Story: The characteristic texture and majesty of these wines is no accident. The 36-hectare estate, set on a vertiginous cliff, is subject to rigorous vineyard management, with a vine density that recalls the great wines of the Medoc in Bordeaux — 6666 vines per hectare. This, together with the silty clay the region is known for, brings opulence and structure.

The Specs: The clay-siliceous soil of Mercuès, coupled with the estate's rocky elevations, are ideal for producing concentrated wines with great aging potential.

Our Tasting Notes: If you are used to Malbecs that are chewy, leathery, and highly extracted, Hobbs's will come as a gorgeous surprise. Fruit-forward and with softer tannins, they are remarkable for their agility and finesse, while sacrificing little of Malbec's intensity and size.

ABV: All three are 14.5%.

Fun Fact: A fixture of the postcard-perfect estate is a medieval castle dating to the 13th century that once was the bishop's summer palace.
