Angelo Gaja is a force in the wine world, an “Italian colossus” whose wines are status symbols—easily standing alongside other icons such as Château Lafite-Rothschild and Krug (Wine Spectator). An innovator from Piedmont and former Decanter “Man of the Year” who has inspired producers like Renato Ratti and Aldo Conterno, Gaja brought his winemaking expertise to Tuscany in 1994 with his purchase of the historic estate Pieve Santa Restituta, located in the southwest corner of Brunello di Montalcino. Working with 100% Sangiovese, Gaja introduced his first-ever classic, non-single vineyard Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello in 2005; the wine, sourced from the best plots located throughout the Tuscan property, provides an excellent, value-driven addition to a portfolio of wines that easily command $400+ a bottle. Today’s 2014 Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello di Montalcino comes in at under $80 a bottle, so there’s no time to lose in adding a case or two of the always-collectible Gaja to your collection!

Angelo Gaja earned his “winemaking legend” status from his innovative approach with Nebbiolo in Piedmont, which included cutting back yields with higher density planting, exercising stricter temperature control of fermentations, and using French oak barriques. He achieved resounding success in Piedmont with his single-vineyard Barbarescos and Barolos (as well as the introduction of French varieties to the vineyards), and began looking elsewhere to fulfill this insatiable desire for experimentation. Acquired with the intention to produce high-quality, single-vineyard Sangiovese, the Pieve Santa Restituta estate spans 16 hectares over white, rocky soils—rugged and nutrient-poor vineyard terrain that is ideal for cultivating grapes to match Gaja’s extremely high standards. The estate originally produced two single-vineyard expressions—Sugarille and Rennina—and both still garner top scores today. In 2005, Gaja introduced a classic (multi-vineyard) Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello expression from grapes sourced from throughout the entire estate. Today, the estate has expanded to include an additional 10 hectares of southwest-facing vineyards in northeastern Montalcino, whose grapes provide impressive structure and backbone to the wines.

Considering the esteemed pedigree, the 2014 Pieve Santa Restituta Brunello is an unbelievable bargain. The wine aged 12 months in barrique with an additional 12-month maturation in botti (large 30-year-old oak casks), and boasts polished, silky tannins and impressive structure. Bright botanical notes combined with aromas of sage, rosemary, red currant, and pomegranate lead to a palate of freshness, elegance, and vibrant acidity. When it comes to Gaja’s rare works of art, we’re always left wishing we had more inventory available for our customers. Don’t miss your chance at adding today’s wine from a one-of-kind legend before we sell out!
