Not that we’re telling you anything you don't know: this is the estate that revolutionized not just Piedmont but, really, the entire Italian wine industry. When Angelo Gaja flamboyantly broke from tradition and scandalized purists, he dragged an entire country into the modern era … and ultimately proved himself to be less provocateur than prophet.

The Sito Moresco Langhe, the DaGromis Barolo, the Alteni di Brassica, the Barbaresco, and the Gaia Rey Langhe DOP are all single-vineyard expressions that showcase Angelo's obsessive attention to terroir. Each wine tells the story of its specific site, filtered through decades of a revolutionary winemaking philosophy that has become the national gold standard.
The scoring speaks for itself: Jeb Dunnuck awarded that perfect 100 points to the Sperss 2021, while his 99-point reviews of the Conteisa 2021 and DaGromis 2021 read like passionate love letters. James Suckling was no less enthusiastic in his writing, awarding 99 points to the Sori Tilden 2022 and 98 points to the Sori San Lorenzo 2022. Even the "entry-level” wines (the Alteni 2023 and the Barbaresco 2022) — if, that is, you can call anything from GAJA entry-level — took home 96 points.
And I simply have to take a moment, here, to say some words about the three grappas, which quietly blew us away.
Think of them, if you will, as the essence of GAJA's most exalted wines — but distilled down into pure, crystalline form. Crafted from the pomace of the estate’s most legendary expressions, including Sperss and Darmagi, they highlight the same meticulous approach that has been at the heart of GAJA for decades, including immediate fermentation after pressing to preserve freshness and distillation in small copper stills to maintain precise control.
In the Sperss, we found intense aromas of black cherries and rose petals and a deep, full-bodied refinement, while the Darmagi served up an array of dried fruits and cocoa with remarkable smoothness and length. The Gaia & Rey was the outlier, but a beautiful one, a wine of delicate florals and subtle minerality, with an unexpectedly rich, almost creamy texture.
