GAJA CA'MARCANDA

TUSCANY, ITALY 2020

Why Buy: Everything we've ever loved about the wines of GAJA's brilliant Bolgheri outpost are on display in these two bottles, the 2020 Ca’Marcanda (20th anniversary release) and the 2021 Ca’Marcanda Magari. Power joined to finesse, weight to elegance, drinkability to ageability.

What They're Saying: "Suave, elegant, and wonderfully expressive," Vinous raved over the 2020 Ca’Marcanda, with "lifted aromatics and silky tannins" and an "effortless" finish. James Suckling hailed the “character” and “savory finish” of the Ca’Marcanda Magari 2021, a blend of Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Petit Verdot.

The Story: Angelo Gaja purchased the Ca'Marcanda vineyard in Bolgheri in 1996, and promptly (and audaciously) proceeded to do with it what he had done previously with his vineyards in Piedmont: elevate it to world-class by focusing on terroir, limiting yields, and aging the wines in French oak barriques. Gaja has long been a figure of controversy in the wine world — even within his own family, with his winemaking father famously taking him to task. His stances, methods, and pronouncements broke from tradition, often flamboyantly. But time has proven this fifth-generation winemaker to be less a provocateur than a prophet. Today he is widely and justly acknowledged and revered as one of Italy's greatest and most revered winemakers, and many of the techniques and practices that he pushed for (and that many others pushed back on) have now been broadly adopted throughout the country.

Our Tasting Notes: The Ca’Marcanda 2020 might just be the most fully realized expression of Carmarcanda yet. Size, concentration, intensity, finesse … but this one also struck us in our tastings with its exceptional freshness in the glass, and the gorgeous seamlessness with which it took us through its stages. And the finish is a thing of beauty: persistent and long. The Ca’Marcanda Magari 2021 is an old-fashioned wine in the very best sense, structured and delineated, and we reveled in its aromatics, rich with the wild herbs of the  Mediterranean. The finish is quintessential Bolgheri, leaving the drinker with a gorgeous, light saline note.

ABV: 14.5%.

What to Pair It With: You could cellar the 2020 for a special occasion and drink it all by itself, with friends. The 2021 is a wine for matchmaking: partner it up with a rack of lamb; a juicy tomahawk steak; a standing rib roast; or a slow-roasted duck or goose.

Fun Fact: Ca'Marcanda comes from a Piedmontese dialect, and roughly translates as: "the house of endless negotiations” -- an allusion to the contentious back and forth over price, in 1996, when the estate’s original owners had sworn they would never sell to Angelo Gaja.
