Since then, this legendary distiller — a three-time winner of Producer of the Year at the International Spirits Challenge — has only burnished its reputation. The Story: The third Master Series release to the United States is made up of both artisanal pot and traditional twin column coffey distilled molasses rums. In all, three different rums — each 14 years old — make up the blend. Maturation was critical to the final product, a complex and layered process that is testament to Foursquare's patience and commitment to the details of its craft. It underwent a single maturation for 14 years in ex-Bourbon; a double maturation for 3 years in ex-Bourbon casks, then 11 years in ex-Oloroso sherry casks; and a double maturation of 10 years in ex-bourbon casks, followed by 4 years in ex-Oloroso sherry casks. All aging, blending and bottling occurring entirely on-site, at the Foursquare Rum Distillery in Barbados.
Our Tasting Notes: Because they are matured in the tropical climate of Barbados, the rums undergo a process that the industry terms "tropical aging." Essentially, a single year in a still in the tropics is akin to two years in a barrel in a more temperate clime. And sure enough, this blend of 14-year rums comes across with the depth, complexity, and smoothness of a 28-year-old rum. Foursquare's Master Distiller, the great Richard Seale, has crafted many an exceptional bottle in his time, but with this Private Cask Selection Master Series he has not just dazzled palates; he has opened eyes. If you have been content to think of rum as mostly an add-in for a Coke, this will change your mind, and, quite possibly, blow it. We think it stands without qualification alongside the great whiskies, bourbons, and Cognacs of the world.
